Donna MILLMAN Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 13 to Feb. 14, 2016.
MILLMAN, Donna Mae (Hendy)
May 21, 1944 - February 5, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Donna Millman, at the age of 71 years. She was predeceased by her best friend and husband, Ian Millman (2013). She is survived by her family: Tracey Dykeman (Tim, Mikaela and Lucy) and Marla Millman (Austin and Sienna); her sister Arlene Rycroft (Keath, Madyline and Erica); her brother-in-law Reid Millman (Garnet and family) and sister-in-law Diane Olsen (Mike and family). She also will be remembered fondly by her cousins, high school pals, golf mates, bridge partners, Vancouver Police and Pipe Band friends, and many others who knew her as "Auntie Donna." Donna was born in Red Deer, Alberta to John and Phyllis Hendy. Growing up in Vancouver, she attended Carleton Elementary and later graduated from Killarney Secondary. She enjoyed playing many sports and, in grade 11, met Ian Millman, the love of her life. Their love affair led to their marriage on October 7, 1966. Donna and Ian raised their family in Burnaby and enjoyed the summers at their cottage in Point Roberts. Together they explored the world, often through the Vancouver Police Pipe Band. They travelled to Scotland, Ian's birthplace; they went to Bali, China, Japan and Hawaii. They cruised to Alaska for Donna's 65th birthday with her sister and husband. Donna fulfilled one of her dreams last year and spent her 71st birthday in New York City where she saw a Yankee's ballgame and Broadway shows. For Donna, this love of travel started in 1965 when she travelled with girlfriends to Europe on the cruise ship Oriana, and celebrated her 21st birthday in Paris. Donna enjoyed working at Woodwards, The Bay and as an independent food demonstrator. She was an amazing cook and loved to entertain, preparing new and exciting dishes for her friends and family. Donna took up the game of golf and became an active member of Pitt Meadows Golf Club. She learned to play bridge and played regularly with friends and fellow golfers. Donna's many friends will remember her fun and easy-going nature. She was fair, patient and considerate, always willing to give her time and energy to various projects and events. She tirelessly and lovingly supported Ian throughout his battle with ALS and was brave and strong when faced with her own illness. She will be missed by so many of her dear friends and loving family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Donna's name to the BC Cancer Agency. A Memorial Gathering is planned for Sunday, March 6, 2016, from 2-4 p.m., at The Pitt Meadows Golf Club, 13615 Harris Road.

I am so sorry that I didn't know that Donna had passed. I just found out today from Laurie Lyons, another PMGCC member.
Donna and Ian meant a great deal to me, and though my parents Sandy and Terry Lazarowich, I got to know them. We had dinners together with them and I was so appreciative of their warmth and generosity. There was always so much laughter and story telling. Poor Donna had to hear the same stories many, many times. She was one of the kindest people I had ever met, and that's saying a lot, because my Dad was just plain crazy! She was so tolerant of him. ❤
We went to Christmas craft fairs together with my Mom, and I loved shopping with Donna.
She must surely be missed terribly.
I know that they are all up there, playing golf, and raising heck!

I am so very sorry for your loss. I met your mom 16 years ago. She was doing a luncheon for Safeway in Mission. I was just starting out doing demos and she helped me get set up even though she was really busy. I worked with her over the years and she was always kind to me. I saw her just after your dad passed. She told me what happened and I said I was so sorry and gave her a hug. She said she would be okay...she had her grandchildren. She was a very special lady!!!! and I will miss seeing her around town! :)

So sorry to hear about Donna....what a huge loss for your family. We go back a long time with Pipe Band days, Point Roberts and the Police. Donna was always smiling, warm and gracious and beautiful. Donna and Ian were a big part of our lives back in the day and we won't ever forget the good times. Our thoughts are with you.....

So sorry for your loss. Just an idea of what Donna meant to a lot of us. Donna had just given the reply to the toast to the lassies. As the mc I thanked her and said " there are those of us who have led lives that could be considered challenging . Through it all donnas advise was always good and in the decades I have known her I never heard her say an unkind word to anyone.
In the end we will all have to ask ourselves if our lives mattered . Donnas life mattered a great deal to many people. She was loved
