Dora Ockerman Obituary

OCKERMAN Dora Lantigua Garcia Baz Ockerman passed away on October 9th, 2016 at the Naval Hospital Jacksonville aka NAS JAX Hospital. She was born on May 6th, 1939 in Havana, Cuba. She was predeceased by her husband Marlin R. Ockerman and her parents Miguel and Dalmira Lantigua, as well as her sisters Dolores Lantigua and Miguelina Cabrera. She is survived by her sisters Maria Suarez and Romelia Rodriguez as well as her son Jose Miguel Baz Ockerman, his wife Adriana P. Murillo and their daughter Camille Avani Ockerman. She attended Dominica Francesca in Havana and graduated from Upperman High School Baxter, Tennessee. She retired from St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside, Jacksonville, Florida. She was a wonderful wife, mother, step mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. She never met a stranger she couldn't call a friend afterward. Her kindness and willingness to help others made her an angel to many. She always found peace and happiness working in her garden. We were truly blessed to have her brighten our days when she shared a story, song, smile or even a candy. She was a passionate Catholic who attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church regularly. Dora and I worked together for many years in the St. Vincent's Family Medicine Center. She always added a little extra sunshine to my day with her smile, her laugh, her "funniness" and her touching me while talking to me. For many years we have been sending each other Christmas cards. Here is an early MERRY CHRISTMAS!, Dora. I know you will get the message. :^)
I love you,

Jose,
As you may know, your Mom have loved you dearly all your life. She was a dedicated proud Mom. I met her when she started working at St. Vincent's Hospital Clinic under Sister Margaret Albert. I worked with her until I left in 1972. We spent time talking about family and Cuba often. I am thankful to have known her during and after SVH. I will keep her in my prayers.

I've known Dora what seems like most of my life. She has lived across the street from my grandparents for over 30 years. She would bring them food, check on them in time of need, lend a listening ear, share stories of her family. My grandmother was always jealous how well her plants grew. Dora said she spoke to her plants and that's why they looked beautiful. When my daughter was little she always had something for her. She was always so generous. I'm heartbroken we won't hear that thick Cuban accent coming over for chats. She was a dear sweet lady and will be forever missed. God bless Jose and his family.

I live cross the street from Dora for 14 years, she was the first one to welcome me to the neighborhood with a plant, we became friends very quickly, and check on each other often throughout the years, we shared so many laughs together and I never seen her in a bad mood.she was extremely proud of her son Jose and bragged about him often.I'm going to miss her so much, especially some of the food she would bring me , and sitting on.her porch talking..
it's so hard to believe that she's gone, I'll miss her smile,Her laugh.her funny stories advice and always saying"that's the way the cookie crumbles"
The neighborhood won't ever be the same without her

Jose and family,
I'm very saddened by this news.
I loved aunt Dora and I will miss her.
I remember when she and uncle Marlin came to Michigan for a visit when my dad was sick, she was talking on the phone to one of her sisters speaking in Spanish, my girls thought that was so cool. My daughter was talking to her friend telling him her aunt was talking in Spanish so she took her phone and started talking to my daughters friend, and we all just started laughing.
She was such a funny lady, I wish we could have visited more.
I'll be thinking of you all and praying for strength to get you through this difficult time.

Love your Michigan cousin

Dora and I became fast friends and kindred spirits this year at the NAS Fitness Source where we both worked out three times a week. Always a sweet and warm person, Dora will be sorely missed. But, I know that she is in a better place. May God richly bless her family and friends as they face the days ahead.

It was quite a shock when my cousin, Jose, told me his mom had passed. We had just talked on the phone as we did often.
Not only was she my favorite aunt but a dear friend to myself, my husband, Ray and our children, Vanessa and Neil. She was always willing to lend an ear.
Her stories about the Cuban revolution were epic. We looked to her as our family historian. I will miss her dearly.

Dear Jose, There is such a sorrow and sadness in the loss of a loved one. We lost our beloved son in law, Tom. It was heartbreaking. Jose, it is okay to mourn your mom's loss your way. Remember that mom's pass on their strength to their children. She is and will always be with you. Feel her energy. Honor the happy times and continue her legacy. You were a fabulous son, are a great family man, coworker and friend, and her light will be shining down on you always and guiding your path. If you need a break, come to the West Coast of Florida and visit us. Written with love and our deepest sympathy, Claudio and Toni Sanchez

My condolences to the family of Mrs. Dora. I knew Mrs. Dora from the gym on base. She was such a sweet lady and will be missed very much. I could come in to work out and be in the worst mood and she would make me laugh with her funny jokes. She always had a positive outlook on everything. It was a great pleasure to know her.
Sincerely
Tina B.
