Dorathea Gulya Obituary

Published by Danbury News Times from Mar. 14 to Mar. 17, 2018.
Dorathea E. Gulya
Dorathea Elizabeth (Boyle) Gulya, 99, formerly of Bethel, and wife of the late William A. Gulya, passed away on March 12 at The Lutheran Home, Southbury, CT. She was born January 9, 1919 in New York City to Joseph D. and Elizabeth T. (Ehrbar) Boyle. Moving to Bethel as a young girl, she was a 1937 graduate of Bethel High School and attended Danbury State Teachers' College. She was 60+ year member of the Joseph A. Treadwell Post #60 American Legion Auxiliary where she served as an officer and President on the unit and district level and held several positions on the statewide department level. She also was active in Salon 45 of the 8 & 40. A hard worker, she raised seven children while working full time at Bradlee's and at F.W. Woolworth in Danbury. In her retirement she loved to travel, crochet and took up painting and has left her family with many of her crafts as cherished treasures. She was predeceased by her beloved husband William and a daughter Elizabeth with whom she is now joined. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Robert Gulya. Her legacy includes seven surviving children; William G., Thomas G, Mary Elizabeth, Dorathea Gulya-Stasny, Helen Goewey, Rev. Paul A., and Jean Blauvelt; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church, Bethel until moving to assisted living where she was a devoted viewer of daily Mass. She was so devoted to the televised daily Mass that Dorathea requested that donations be made in her memory to keep this Mass available for shut-ins like herself. Donations may be sent in her memory to OFFICE OF RADIO & TELEVISION, 15 Peach Orchard Road, Prospect, CT 06712-1052. There will be no calling hours and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 19, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Mary, 26 Dodgingtown Rd., Bethel. Interment will follow at the family plot at St. Mary Cemetery. Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Ave., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Bill and Dorathea Gulya were Bethel's finest. I met them both in the mid-1980's when Bill was involved in local affairs, and I spent plenty of time at their house over the next 2-3 decades getting to know them. It was an honor and a privilege to have known Dorathea and I send my thoughts and prayers to the family.
