Doreen Skinner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 30, 2008.
Sister Doreen Marie Skinner, (97), entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at The Village at Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas. Born in Baltimore, Ireland, to Henry and Mary Jane (Scully) Skinner, she was given the name Dora. Sister Doreen Marie entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1928, professing her first vows in 1930 and perpetual vows in 1935. She received a Bachelor's Degree in English and a Master's Degree in Elementary Education, both from Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word). Sister Doreen Marie spent 43 years educating children at many of the Congregation's schools in Texas and Louisiana. Sister Doreen Marie once recalled her five years working with the poor in 1940s Weslaco as among her most treasured and fulfilling memories, noting Our CCVI community living style was truly simple and even poor, but we felt no sense of deprivation. By comparison with many of the families around us, we were not poor. A creative thinker, Sister once gathered her mother's recipes into a cookbook that was then sold in order to raise funds for the Congregation. Sister Doreen Marie is survived and dearly missed by her niece, Mary Skinner and other nieces and nephews in Ireland and England and by her Sisters in her congregation. The Rosary is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 30 and Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 31 both in St. Joseph's Chapel at The Village at Incarnate Word, 4707 Broadway. Interment will follow the Mass in the Convent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, P.O. Box 15378, San Antonio, Texas 78212. Arrangements by: The Angelus Funeral Home.
