Doris Farquharson

Doris Joan Farquharson (nee Reyes) of Suffern, NY, passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2025 at the age of 89. She was born May 27, 1935 to Salvador and Mary Reyes (nee DelCheccolo) in Yonkers, New York. Doris graduated from Blessed Sacrament Academy, Yonkers, NY in 1952. She briefly worked in Manhattan as a secretary until marrying Adrian Ryan "Scotty" Farquharson in 1955 and starting their family.

Doris and Scotty met teaching ballroom dancing in Yonkers. They danced so beautifully together. Scotty predeceased Doris in September 2024. During their 69-year marriage they had five children: Donna King, Robert (Dianna), James (Lori), Scott, and Kim Kelly (William). Doris had a close and special relationship with her cousin John Redding, and his wife, Bettie, who also predeceased her. Many joyful Thanksgivings were spent with them, their children and their spouses, and eventually their children.

Doris doted on her eight grandchildren: Brionna and Raina King, Ian and Jack Farquharson, Timothy Farquharson, Deanna Campos, and William and Adrienne Kelly. She is also blessed with two great grandchildren: Delilah and Denina Campos. She was the ultimate grandma and great grandma. She always made favorite foods when they visited and spent time with them doing special activities like arts and crafts, cooking and baking, and even basement floor hockey.

Doris was an excellent cook and baker. She was not a fancy cook, but everything she made was delicious. None more so than her lasagna. Recipes merely gave ideas, used as starting points, put aside, and made better by her. During her 25 or so years working for Shop-Rite, she was known as "the salad bar lady" and was loved by her customers. She fed them well using her ability to whip up creative fare. Her salad bar was the most successful for the chain, at least up until her retirement.

Doris' favorite place on earth was their cottage, the Sea Cliff, in Old Lyme, CT on the Long Island Sound. It was truly restorative for her, body and soul, and she loved sharing it with family and friends. Having to let it go in 2019 was very hard for her; so many wonderful memories were made there beginning in the 1960's.

Funeral services for Doris and Scotty will be on May 27th at 11:00 AM at Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY 10901, followed by burial at Airmont Coptic Orthodox Cemetery (formerly Airmont Lutheran Cemetery). For those who wish to honor their memory, donations may be made to Victoria Acres Equine Facility, an organization whose therapeutic riding program has greatly helped her granddaughter, Adrienne.
