Doris Rathell

In the early hours of December 17, 2020, Doris Katherine Wood Rathell, just five days shy of her 100th birthday, passed peacefully at the home of her daughter Joyce Rathell Murray in Cumberland, MD.

She is now reunited with her beloved husband Harry M. Rathell who passed in January 1975. Doris is preceded in death by her father and mother, Joseph and Katherine Wood, her brother Joseph Wood Jr., and her sister Berdell Founds.

She is survived by daughters Madelon Wilhelm Neunsinger and Joyce Murray (husband Ed). She leaves behind granddaughter Jennifer, grandsons Karl (wife Shelley) and Eric (wife Chole), and great-grandchildren Morgan, Benjamin, Chloe, Zane, and Vaun. Other family members include nephews Joseph III, Jeffrey, Thomas, Robert, Steven, and niece Katherine.

Until the last 17 years of her life, Doris resided in Middle River and also enjoyed many wonderful summers at her vacation home in Ocean City, MD. She was a graduate of the 1938 class of Eastern High School, worked at the Maryland National Bank in Highlandtown as a secretary until retirement in 1982, belonged to Gleaner Chapter #49 of the Eastern Star, and was a life-long member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran United Church of Christ. Doris and her husband Harry were active in politics and looked forward to working at the polls every election. Harry and Doris were charter members of the Wilson Point Men's Club where they spent many happy summer's day and made lasting friendships.

Doris was blessed with a long and healthy life surrounded by her family and dear friends --especially the late James Schammel and her neighbor of 67 years, Mrs. Ida Behler.

Our Mom wanted us to remember her with smiles and laughter, rather than sadness and tears, and so we will.
