Doris Spangler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, 2013.
Doris Dillon Spangler died on Sunday, October 27, 2013, surrounded by family in her home in Sacramento, California. Just a few days shy of 91 years, Doris lived a long, full life worthy of much celebration.

Doris was born on November 2, 1922 in Fresno, California and grew up in Sanger and Selma, CA. She later went on to graduate from Samuel Merritt College of Nursing, and it was around this time that she met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" N. Spangler. The couple wed on June 6, 1944 and were married for 58 wonderful years. Together they raised five children, all of whom have found their own loving partners--Jennifer (Bob) Koelewyn, Dan (Annette) Spangler, Steve (Cheryl) Spangler, Jean (Larry) Garcia, and Margaret (Don) Padilla. Doris was the matriarch of an extensive family tree that includes these five children and their spouses along with 13 grandchildren, many of whom are now married, and 22 (and 1/2!) great-grandchildren, all of whom loved, cherished, and admired her greatly. Doris is also survived by her sister- in-law, Cleora Dillon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris possessed a contagious smile and a presence that lit up a room. She epitomized joy, and she touched innumerable lives through her love, generosity, and charitable work. Not only did she use her expertise as a registered nurse to help those around her, she also supported many charities and volunteered her talents to several organizations and causes. Doris was a woman of strong values and convictions. She remained an active and loyal member of Fairview Church in Trowbridge, California throughout her adult life.

As the heart of the Spangler family, Doris served as a remarkable example and mentor. Her gifts of joy, love, thoughtfulness, and generosity will never be forgotten and will always reside in the hearts and lives of those she's touched. Doris truly lived every moment of her life to its fullest, and her memory and legacy bear testament to that. We do not mourn a life lost; we celebrate a life lived.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Doris Spangler will be held at Fairview Community Christian Church at 1991 Pacific Ave, Trowbridge, CA on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 12:00 with a reception to follow. On a day that would have been her 91st birthday, we not only honor the extraordinary life she's lived, but we also celebrate the new life she's just begun.

Memorial donations can be made to: *Fairview Community Christian Church: 1991 Pacific Ave, Trowbridge, CA 95659, (530) 656-2381; *South Sutter Recreation Association: PO Box 225, Nicolaus, CA 95659

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support that has flooded in since her passing. It is profoundly apparent that Doris was extremely loved and adored and will be missed greatly by all.

My family was friends with the Spanglers, Fred and Flavia Jones, my grandparents, and my mother, Betty Novak and my Aunt, Marge Digges. I've heard about Doris my whole life. Sounds like she had a grand time and lived life like everyone should live it.

Sadly we will be out of town and cannot attend Doris' memorial. Doris will always be fondly thought of, and the world and community of which she lived will sadly have a loss to bear. Doris was a Remarkable person!

I believe I met Doris many, many years ago, through her daughter, "Peggy" (if Peggy attended El Camino HS in Sacramento)? It sounds like Doris was an amazing lady, and you were blessed to have her with you all these years. If this is the same Peggy, please contact me when you can. [email protected]
