Doris E. Thornton age 80 of Gary,In passed away Tuesday April 9,2024.Doris was born January 14, 1944 to the late Moody Askew and the late Bessie Sims Askew in Jackson, Tennessee. Doris graduated from Gary Froebel High School in1963. Doris is preceded in death by daughter Yvonne, parents Moody and Bessie, and brother Willie. Doris leaves to celebrate her life: son Kwuame Amon-Ra of Indianapolis, IN, two sisters Shirley Askew and Rosa Askew (fiance' Richard) both of Gary, brother Robert Askew (Marva) of Killeen, TX, uncle Elder Jesse Sims, Sr., aunt Mary Evelyn Griggs, both of Gary. Additionally, Doris leaves to cherish her memories five grandchildren: George Nichols, Jr., NyTia Lenear, Eric Leroy Earl Muhammad, Andre Marshall, Jr., and Bernard Nichols, Jr. Four great grandchildren, special friend LaShanna Conwell, of Indianapolis, and friend Danielle Issac of Gary, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,other relatives and friends. Wake Thursday April 18,2024 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Funeral 12:00 p.m. all services at Powell-Coleman Funeral Home 3200 W. 15th Ave Gary,In. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park Hobart,In.

I found out today that Doris had passed. Iuse to live a couple of doors down from her at 650 Jackson Street. We were good friends and shared some good times together. May God comfort you and your family in this difficult time. and God will answer.
