Dorothy Andrews Obituary

Dorothy Jane (Whitcomb) Andrews, of Concord MA, was born in Portland ME, July 15, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Charles S. Whitcomb and Violet (Jumpre) Whitcomb. She and her husband, Francis S. Andrews, lived in Lincoln, MA for 48 years. She has been a resident of Concord since 2007.

Mrs. Andrews graduated from Deering High School, Portland, and Wellesley College (1943) where she served as chairman of her 50th Reunion and has been class president.

After her graduation, Mrs. Andrews worked for the Division of Education at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She was a member of the DeCordova Musuem in Lincoln where she was active in programs and exhibitions for many years. In 1978, the American Folk Art Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Andrews was exhibited at the DeCordova Museum. Later, important pieces were given to the Museum of American Folk Art in New York, where the Andrews were also members. The Andrews Collection toured world-wide, and several folk sculptures are in the Museum's permanent collection.

Mr. & Mrs. Andrews also collected minerals with a special emphasis on Maine specimens. Their collection was given to the Norway (Maine) Historical Society where it is permanently displayed.

The Andrews were summer residents at Lake Kewaydin in East Stoneham, Maine and were avid travelers. They visited all seven continents and went around the world in 1987.

Mrs. Andrews was a member of the First Parish Church in Lincoln, the Lincoln Garden Club, the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary and the Wellesley College Alumnae of Boston. In earlier years she served as an officer in the Parents League of Lincoln and the Boston Mineral Club.

She is survived by two sons, Scott F. of Portland, ME and Robert J. of Hopkinton, MA, Robert's wife Meredith Stewart-Andrews and their daughter, Bailey.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 13th at 1:00 PM at the Chapel located at Newbury Commons, 80 Deaconess Road, Concord, MA.
