Dorothy Arold Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2021.
Dorothy Lorraine Arold (nee Higginbotham) died December 28, 2020, at age 84. She was born in Newport News, Va., to John and Margaret Taylor Higginbotham on August 5, 1936.

She graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in music with a concentration in piano performance and began a 40-year career in piano instruction. For her entire life, Dottie was very involved in music wherever she lived, not only as a teacher but also as an accompanist, instrumental ensemble groups, choral groups as well as solo performance and weddings. She was also on the music faculty at St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, N.C. as the accompanist and diction coach for those majoring in vocal performance. Promoting the performing arts in the community and music participation in her church were highly important to her.

While at Ohio University she met Robert L. Arold and they were married September 14, 1957.

Dottie is survived by their three children, Jennifer (Scott) Rubertus, Craig (Cindy) Arold, Mark (Paula) Arold; grandchildren, Kristyn (Sam) Phelps, Matthew (Michele) Rubertus, Lauren (William) Wolfe, Lindsay (Dennis) Vinias, Robert (Leah) Arold, Blake, Jenna and Derek Arold; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Leanne, Evan and Jack; and sister, Connie Neef.

Dottie enjoyed the companionship of her two cats, loved to laugh and have fun with friends, but especially with family, who brought her great joy and miss her deeply.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609, on July 10, 2021 at 1 p.m. Donations can be made to Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited, Alzheimer's Association, Ally Cat Allies or a performing arts organization of your choice. Final arrangements were handled by Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus, Md.

I met Dot as I started pet sitting her 2 cats and we soon became very good friends. We would often have dinner together at her house and we even went to a Christmas play in downtown Wilmington together. I still miss her dearly and her beautiful smile.

My dearest Dot,

I started out as a pet sitter for your 2 sweet angels-but it turned into a great friendship. We went to a beautiful holiday show downtown and we often would get together just to have dinner and talk. She spoke of her children with love and compassion and she loved to tell me loving stories about them. I will miss you deeply and will always remember all the time we had taking about our kitties!

Dear Connie, Jenny, Craig, Mark, and family,

We cousins in the Pacific Northwest send our condolences on your loss, remembering Dorothy as a charming, talented, elegant person with an easy laugh. We know that she truly cherished her family, and we´re happy that she will live forever in your hearts.

It has been many years since we´ve seen you all. My parents (Jean & Phil) always loved visiting you, attending family weddings and other events or just hanging out. Dorothy was a first cousin to my mother. My most recent memory of her was at Mom´s life celebration dinner after her service. Dorothy spent almost the entire dinner talking with my son Ryan about how to operate a successful music teaching studio. She had so many wonderful tips and was very encouraging about how to get started. She took him under her wing on that sad day and gave him something to feel hopeful about. That was who she was.

May you all feel comforted in these days by warm memories of Dorothy. As Dr. Seuss said, "Don´t cry because it´s over. Smile because it happened." All of us smile when we think of Dorothy.

Love from cousins and family,
Kathy, Steve, Ryan, Laura, Adam, and Heidi

Dear Craig and Cindy- I am saddened to learn that your Mom has passed away. She and your Dad so graciously welcomed my late husband Dick and me to Raleigh 28 years ago. She was such a delight and full of spunk. It was she who introduced me to the world of music in the Triangle....and now, Dorothy, I know that you are singing with angels.

My deepest sympathy to each of you.

Affectionately, Linda O´Connor

Although we lived a long way from one another and seldom saw one another, second cousin Dorothy was always one of my favorite relatives. I think we connected as both pianists, in addition to bloodlines. I always envied and admired her ability to pursue a career in music, and thoroughly enjoyed her company on the rare occasions we were able to interact. I'm sorry for the loss of those who were closer to her, and I will always remember her fondly.
