Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Dorothy W. Gallagher, long time Sea Pines resident, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, February 19, 2023, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family as she was called to Our Lord.
Dorothy was preceded in death by the love-of-her-life, Richard Gallagher. Dorothy and Richard were married for 61 years (his death) and together lovingly raised 5 children: Donna Lee Gallagher Scholar (Robert) of Burton MI, Mary Heath (Jeff) of McLean VA, Patt Corcoran (Sean) of Hilton Head and Marietta GA, Michael (Anne) of Chattanooga TN and Mark (Elba) of Marietta GA. Dorothy was the loving grandmother of nine and great grandmother of two! Predeceased by her sister, Jerri and brother, Arthur, Dorothy is survived by her best friend and sister, Rita Neth, of Strongsville OH.
Dorothy was 92 years young and enjoyed life to the fullest. She could frequently be found at the Sea Pines Country Club where she enjoyed dining, golf, playing Mah Jong and Canasta with friends or observing her girl friends playing Pickleball. While her golf days may have been behind her, Dorothy took pride in becoming a member of the hole-in-one club when she was in her 80's! Her advice to all golfers: Never give up!
Dorothy was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1930 and was a longtime (and frequently heart- broken) Chicago Bears fan. She married Richard in 1957 and they enjoyed an incredible honeymoon in Cuba before the rise of the Castro government. The couple settled in the Chicago suburbs where they began raising their children. In 1969, the Gallagher family moved to the Main Line of Philadelphia where Richard and Dorothy joined the Aronimink Golf Club. Thus began Dorothy's love of golf, tennis and paddle tennis. Richard and Dorothy discovered Hilton Head in 1970 and decided to make the island their "home away from home." In 2015, they were delighted to leave the northeast winters behind becoming full time Sea Pines residents.
Dorothy had many friends and interests but nothing gave her more pleasure than being surrounded by her loving family. She loved hearing about everyone's lives and relished visits from immediate and extended family members. After her beloved husband passed away in 2019, Dorothy took comfort in the companionship of her Havanese rescue dog, Charlie.
The Gallagher family is so grateful for the outpouring of love for our dear mother. We would like to thank all of her fabulous care givers, health advocates (including the wonderful nurses, doctors and aides at the Hilton Head Regional Hospital) and in particular, Dr. Gregory Haidemenos of the St. Jospeh's/Candler Health system.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Saturday, March 4, at 10am. Following interment at Six Oaks Cemetery, the Gallagher family invite all friends and family to a luncheon reception at the Sea Pines Country Club, 30 Governor's Rd.
