Dorothy HENDRIX Obituary

HENDRIX, Dorothy
Cox Braxton
Dorothy Cox Braxton Hendrix-born Dorothy Mae Cox on March 4, 1932 in Charleston, South Carolina. An Austin, Texas transplant since 1969.

Dorothy was a retired Registered Nurse who graduated from Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing in 1976. Upon graduation she was immediately offered a job within the hospital. She worked there in Recovery/Surgery/ER for 18 years after which she went to Seton Hospital working in Short-Stay and ER until she retired in 1998.

After retiring she began a whole new life! One as a "Creeker." Moving to Onion Creek and joining the social network there had her busier than when she was working nights with 12 hour shifts. She became president of the Bridge Club, voraciously read, sewed, knitted and crafted for various causes, all the while staying available to help anyone at a moment's notice. Her heart was truly the size of Texas and she will be missed.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Franklin D. Hendrix, Sr. She is survived by her 2 sons: Hammond Hendrix, wife Joan and Grandpup Molly the Corgi, and Frank Hendrix, Jr.; her daughter from a previous marriage Deanie and husband Bo; grandchildren Jimmy, and Christy & husband Trey; great grandchildren T.J., Taryn, & Cole. She also leaves behind her only sibling and sister Mickey Bosher, Mickey's son Michael and his children Michael, Jr., and Maggie; and brother-in-law Copeland Hendrix.

Family will receive friends at 9:00 am on Friday, April 8, 2016, at Cook Walden Capital Parks Memorial Chapel, 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas, 512-251-4118. A 10:00 am funeral service with Interment will follow.

If you would like to honor Dorothy we ask that you make a donation to Hospice Austin.

Dorothy spent the last 18 days of her life in Christopher House, (Hospice Austin's inpatient facility) where she said she felt "safe and taken care of." She wanted everyone to know about the "special place" where a miniature horse visits you. She was a kind and competent nurse thinking of others right to her end. This was Dorothy Hendrix--loving, courageous, and generous to her final breath.

For any questions related to donating to Hospice Austin, please call (512) 342-4747 or email to: [email protected]. Donations may also be mailed to: Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Ste. 100, Austin, TX 78759.

Dear Hammond, Frank and Family, Can't believe it has been three years since Aunt Dot's passing. My sisters and myself loved being around Aunt Dot when we were children in Charleston, S. C. I miss her uplifting emails I received every week for a couple of years before she got so sick. I am sure you still feel the loss. I pray today will be filled with some great memories of Aunt Dot. She was very good to me and I sure am thankful for the great memories Aunt Dot gave me. God bless each one of you, Margie (Cox) Hart

I am so sorry that you have lost your beloved mom! Dorothy visited my room at Seton after I had surgery in 1991, and I thought that was so very nice and supportive. I will always be grateful. Every time that I saw Dorothy at social gatherings she was so friendly and upbeat about life. A true sweetheart. My prayers are with her family and friends.

I met Dorothy years ago when she visited her son Hammond. I was so impressed by her sense of humor, her love of life, her willingness to help others, and most of all for her love of her family. My condolences to her family for her loss. I know she'll be dearly missed.

Aunt Dot was my first cousin, but we grew up calling her Aunt Dot. She was very good to my sisters, brother and myself. I will always remember how beautiful she was and her fantastic personality. It has been a joy to reconnect with Aunt Dot. I will greatly miss her. My heart goes out to Aunt Mickey and Aunt Dot's family.

Dorothy was so kind and giving. She drove me to and from the Airport during my cancer treatments at MD Anderson in 2011. She helped so much during Marsha's stints in the ER/ICU after her aneurysm. We used to enjoy talks on her back porch watching the golfers go by. She was one of our best friends in Onion Creek! Her energy and infectious laugh made us think she would be around forever.

It was my privilege to work with Dorothy many years at Brackenridge hospital in Austin Texas and both of us stayed in touch over the years after we both left Brackenridge. We always had a lot of fun working together, and she and Dale were always good to " keep me feed" on the evening shift!!! I will always remember her for her optimistic personality, sweet smile, and her wonderful southern Charleston drawl in her speech. She loved to sing and during holidays always hummed or softly sung Christmas songs. She and I stayed in touch with email and I certainly will miss them, cute jokes, history information and political information. I was certainly blessed to have been able to call her friend for 25+ years. Rest in peace Dorothy, I love you!!!, Judy Connor
