York - Dorothy (Righter) Woomer Jacobs, of York, died on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 10:52 p.m., in Belleview, PA. Born on December 18, 1923, in Burnham, PA, she was the daughter of the late Fred Bruce and Bernice (Moyer) Righter. Her first husband, Dr. Kendall K. Woomer, died May 18, 1963, and her second husband, Dr. Harry G. Jacobs, died September 30, 2000, after thirty-five years of marriage. Mrs. Jacobs grew up in Highland Park, Lewistown, PA, where she attended elementary and secondary schools, graduating in 1942 from Derry Township High School at Yeagertown. After working during the WWII years at the American Viscose Corporation, she enrolled in and graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College, now Shippensburg University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Biology. Continuing her education at Penn State University, Mrs. Jacobs earned state certification as a speech therapist and a Master's degree in secondary education as well as completing course work toward her doctorate in education. She taught in high schools at Warriors Mark, Derry Township at Yeagertown, Ridgway, and her last twenty-one years as a Language Arts teacher and department chairperson at Shippensburg High School, retiring in 1979 after over thirty years as an educator. During her retirement years, in addition to her devotion to her home and family, her main interests were reading, writing poetry, quilting, oil painting, and corresponding with former students and student teachers. Over the years she had been active in a number of civic and educational organizations and was a founding member of the Shippensburg chapter of the American Association of University Women and a member of the Elizabeth Early Chapter of Eastern Star. Mrs. Jacobs is survived by one step-son, Robert R. Jacobs and wife Cathy of York; three step-grandchildren: Scott R. Jacobs, Middlebury, Vermont; Dr. Heather Tedesco (Joseph), McLean, Virginia; and Lisa Buer (Justin), York; and five step-great grandchildren: Sophia, William, and Henry Tedesco, Maya Jacobs, and Jacob Buer. Also surviving are two brothers and one sister: Glenn Righter, Lewistown; Richard Righter, York, and Virginia Geedey, Lewisburg. Two sisters, Edith A. Mazuc and Marian Kipp and one brother, Charles Righter along with two nephews, Charles R. Righter and Paul E. Kipp, Jr., preceded her in death. Mrs. Jacobs is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Charles H. Filand of Lancaster. There will be private graveside services at the convenience of the family, with burial in Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg. The Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg, has been entrusted with her funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, it is Mrs. Jacobs' wish that tributes be made to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 397 Tyler Run Rd., Your, PA 17403.
