Dorothy MILLMAN Obituary

Published by Contra Costa Times on Sep. 26, 2010.
Dorothy Millman Resident of Danville Dorothy Millman, a remarkable woman decades ahead of her time, died peacefully on August 27, 2010 at the age of 103. She was born Sarah Rosenfeld in Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of five sisters. She attended Maxwell Training School for Teachers and taught in the NY Public School District for many years. She married Sidney Millman in 1931 and they were a devoted couple for 74 years. Sidney passed away in 2006. In 1950 they moved to New Jersey where Sidney became Executive Director of Physical Research at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill. In 1994, they moved to Rossmoor to be closer to their family. Dorothy and Sidney were generous donors to the Jewish Community Center in Walnut Creek, where they established the Dorothy and Sidney Millman Respite Center to support persons with memory impairment due to Altzheimer's and other forms of dementia as well as supporting their caregivers. They were also generous supporters of Festival Opera in Walnut Creek and scholarship programs at CCNY and the Technion in Israel. Dorothy lived her life independently and with commitment. She was admired for her keen intellect, her strength of character and her stamina. She was President of the West Orange Chapter of Hadassah twice, volunteered for many years at the Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ and continued to take adult education classes for most of her life. She was a consummate Mah Jong, Bridge and Scrabble player, as well as traveling the world, her true passion. Dorothy lived by two sayings: "To rest is to rust." and "Nothing is more important than family." Dorothy provided a magnificent example of a long life well lived. Her family and friends will treasure her memory. She is survived by her son, Michael Millman; 3 grandchildren, Laura, David and Matthew; and 4 great-grandchildren, Elena, Emma, Jack and Lucy. A memorial service will be held at the Reutlinger Community for Jewish Living, 4000 Camino Tassajara, Danville on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 10:30am. Her many friends are invited to attend. Contributions can be made to the Millman Adult Day Program at the JCC of Contra Costa County, 2071 Tice Valley Boulevard, Walnut Creek, CA 94595.
