Dorothy Myers

Dorothy Elizabeth Hill Myers, 95, of Munday went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 12, 2022. Visitation will be from 6pm to 7pm on Thursday September 15th, at the McCauley-Smith Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 11am on Friday September 16th, at the First United Methodist Church in Munday, Texas.

Dorothy was born July 8, 1927 to Richard (Dick) Andrew and Sophie Adeline (Addie) Cathey Hill in their family farm home in Silver City, Texas in Coryell County. On August 31, 1946 she married her High School sweetheart, Douglas Myers. They celebrated 54 years of wonderful marriage before his death in 2000.They enjoyed traveling together, attending their children's and grand children's school events and Monday nights at the Dairy Queen with their friends.

Dorothy was a long-time active member of the First United Methodist Church in Munday. She faithfully served on many committees, taught Sunday school classes, served as chairman of the Methodist youth program, helped during Vacation Bible School each year and served as Senior adult on the Advisory Committee.

She was a member of the Beta Chi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and served as President from 1984 to 1986. She was an active member of Knox County Retired School Personnel and served as President from 1993-1995. She was a member of Texas State Teachers Association. She taught Adult Literacy at the Munday Library from 1988-1996 and at the Methodist Church from 2005-2013.

At age 9, she felt the call to be a schoolteacher, as her Mother had been. She graduated from Jonesboro High School as class Valedictorian in May 1944. She enrolled in Clifton Junior College in June 1944. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Education in May 1945 and her dream to be a teacher began in September 1945. Her first teaching assignment was in Morgan, Texas in Bosque County. She taught 7th& 8th grades, coached girls Junior High and High School basketball and volleyball for four years. Dorothy was attending North Texas Teachers College in the summer while also taking correspondence and Extension Courses. After marrying Douglas in 1946, she continued teaching at Morgan and attended North Texas State Teachers College in Denton during the summer months. She and Douglas received their bachelor's degree in education in August 1949. They then moved to Weinert, Texas where Douglas was Elementary Principal, a Coach, and science teacher in grades 5,6,7,8. Douglas graduated with a Master's in Education in 1953 and became Weinert ISD's Superintendent. Dorothy was a First Grade teacher until 1953.

They moved to Weinert, Texas and she began teaching 1st Grade from 1949 to 1953. She dearly loved her Weinert 1st graders! She stayed home with her 4 children until 1966 when Douglas became Superintendent of Munday ISD. Dorothy taught Special Education from 1966-1970. While teaching Special Education she received her Masters Degree in Special Education and Guidance Counseling from Hardin Simmons College in August 1970. Special Education Plan A began September of 1970 for Haskell and Knox Counties where she was a counselor for the Haskell-Knox Consortium. She continued her post graduate education at Texas Women's University and became a certified Diagnostician in 1972. She retired from teaching in May of 1988 after 31 years of service.

Dorothy was a devoted wife, precious Mother, a loving Granny, and a faithful friend to many. One of her many joys was visiting her children, grandchildren, and great grands! Her home was always a gathering place for family and friends. She loved playing cards and chicken foot with her children, grandchildren and great grands. She loved to crochet afghans, dollies and ornaments for many of her family and friends. She was well known in the community for making "Honey Bars" and giving to many. Each of us will have our own special memories of her that will live within us. She will be forever loved by those that were blessed to be touched by her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Douglas, infant son Douglas Reed Jr., her parents Richard and Addie Cathey Hill, four brothers; Frank Hill, Royal Hill, J.W. Hill, and Henry Hill: 2 sisters; Willie Marshall and Carrie Tabers, and one Grandson Jonathon Hay Phillips.

Family members left to cherish Dorothy's memory are her four children: Diane Parchman of Munday, Helen (Howard) Scheffler of Hurst, Greg Myers (Joan) of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Mary Kim (Greg) Gilmore of Lubbock; her 9 Grandchildren and 15 Great-Grandchildren: Todd (Brittany) Parchman of Houston and children Austin, Katy Annie, Avery, and Charlie; Tami (Zach) Tonsi of Flower Mound and children Adeline and Hayes; Hunter (Christine) Scheffler of Hurst and son Jack; Harrison (Elizabeth) Scheffler of Fort Worth; Jessica Myers of Oklahoma City; Emily (Austin) Smith of Denver, Colorado and daughter Sutton; Rebecca Garcia of Fort Worth and children Shaun, Zane and Emily; and Tyler (Amanda) Phillips of Lubbock and children Tyson, Tucker and Elijah.

She is also survived by two sisters: June Adams of Fritch and Virginia Flippen of Evant.

The family would like to express our loving appreciation to Angel Paul for the loving care she provided for our mother.
