Dorothy Mae Scheurer

July 12, 1939 - June 12, 2025

Dorothy Mae Scheurer, age 85, of Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia on July 12, 1939, she was the cherished daughter of Paul Hauser and Anna Hauser (née Dignan).

Dorothy is survived by her devoted partner, George Smith; former husband, Joseph Scheurer (married 1961-2006); her children, Joe Scheurer, Brad Scheurer, and Gwen Klaus (Pete) (née Scheurer); and her beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Ben, Gabe, and Charlie. She was preceded in death by her siblings Emma, Paul, Gus, Joe, Bill, Bob, Sis, Joan, and Phyllis. She is also survived by her brother, John (Carol), and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a proud graduate of Jules E. Mastbaum High School, Class of 1957. She began her career at David Weber Co. Inc. on Richmond Street, working there from 1957 to 1961. After raising her family, she returned to the workforce at the PENJERDEL Council on Walnut Street, where she remained until her retirement in 2010.

A generous and philanthropic spirit, Dorothy had a deep love for the arts. She was an active supporter of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Philly Pops with Peter Nero, The Curtis Institute of Music, and the Sound All Around program for children. She dedicated much of her time to volunteering with these organizations and sharing her passion for the arts with others.

Dorothy was also a loyal sports fan. She held season tickets to the 76ers, loved watching the Phillies, and never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Eagles. Summers were often spent at her home in Ocean City, where she enjoyed the peaceful bay views and was a proud member of the Ocean City Yacht Club. She had a deep love for animals and was known for her genuine kindness and heartfelt advice.
