Dorothy Swor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 31 to Jun. 1, 2016.
Funeral services for Dorothy Ann (Lawrence) Swor, 73, of Lufkin will be held June 1, 2016 at 3 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Kyle Campbell and Jim McDonald officiating. Interment will follow in the Fielder Memorial Cemetery. Dorothy passed away surrounded by her family at CHI St. Luke's Hospital in Lufkin, Texas, on May 30, 2016. From her birth on October 28, 1942 to her death on Monday, she nourished people around her with love, faith, and compassion. She was born in Lufkin, Texas to James Lee and Dorothy Lawrence. She graduated from Bel Air High School in El Paso in 1961, and was in the Top Ten of her class. She went on to graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor's degree in Education and later earned her Master's in Education. Dorothy had a passion for teaching and making a difference in the lives of her students. She taught for thirty-seven years in public schools throughout the area as well as Angelina College and Sylvan Learning Center. Her students were extremely important to her, and it thrilled her soul each time she was able to reconnect with them. In later years, she had a heart for Special Education. So many students left a mark on her heart and she on theirs. Dorothy also had a love of genealogy and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Family connection was so important to her. Music touched her soul and times spent singing with her family and friends were some of her favorite. She was a member of the Loop 287 Church of Christ. Left to honor Dorothy, and remember her love, is her beloved husband of fifty-two years, Vernon Swor of Huntington, Texas; her children and children's spouses, who she felt like were her own, Karen and Dan Eddins of Lufkin, Kevin and Andrea Swor of Diboll, and Scott and Kristi DiStefano of Longview; grandchildren Ashley Eddins, Daniel Eddins and his wife Lisa, John David Eddins, Cheyenne Swor, Kristopher DiStefano, and Kaitlyn DiStefano; sister Susan Wohleking; brothers-in-law RV Swor and Rodney Swor; sister-in-law Glenda Swor; numerous nieces and nephews, many lifelong friends, and many who knew her as "Gran". She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law Mike Wohleking and Leland Swor. Pallbearers will be the deacons of the Loop 287 church of Christ. Honorary pallbearers will be Dorothy's past students who she loved so much. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation, 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, Connecticut 06851 or a charity of your choice. Memories and condolences may be added, and live webcasting of the services may be viewed at www.carrowayfuneralhome.com. Carroway Funeral Home, Lufkin, directors.

I am saddened at reading about Dorothy's passing, and I would like to offer my condolences. I substituted for Dorothy for a month at CISD in 1981. She had pneumonia, so I was asked to start that school year off for her. I didn't know her, but when we communicated about lesson plans, etc., she was really sweet. May the LORD comfort and strengthen all those who loved and cared for her.

What a blessing Dorothy Swor was to me when I was a student at Central High School! I knew her as "Mrs. Swor"...the teacher that always had a smile and a kind word, the teacher that believed in and took time for her students, the teacher that challenged & encouraged you to always do your best! What a great influence she was and what a profound impact she had! She will always hold a special place in my heart and in my memories. To her friends & family - I will be praying for you in the days and weeks ahead - that God will bring peace & comfort as only He can, and that your good memories of Dorothy will remain vivid as her legacy lives on.
