Dorothy Wielgus, age 79 of Niles, IL, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2021. She was born in Chicago, IL on January 10, 1942, to Thomas and Martha Zmich. On September 2, 1961, she married her high-school sweetheart Kenneth Wielgus.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Kenneth, who she was married to for 60 years. She is also survived by her daughter Debbie (David) Rechenberg, Larry, Kevin (Lisa) Wielgus, and Brian (Diane Michalski) Wielgus; her 7 grandchildren Kayla, Peter, Dr. Amy Rechenberg (Steve Zubrzycki), Heidi, Michael, Ethan, and Audrey, as well as many other cousins; in addition, her late siblings Richard Zmich (the late Geri) and the late Thomas Zmich (Gerry).
Dorothy led a selfless life with a passion for helping others. She touched many peoples’ lives in various ways. For work, she was a beautician and later she worked for Dr. Husain’s office. Outside of work, she was involved in many local organizations: the SJB Catholic Women’s Club, the Cub Scouts, and the Girl Scouts. Recently, she created fond memories with her friends at The Sheridan of Park Ridge. And she served a motherly role to countless neighbors young and old, especially in helping to raise her first granddaughter Kayla.
Family was important to her. She was renowned for creating a detailed family tree to record the family’s ancestry. A true soccer mom, she made sure her kids never missed kickoff. And for baseball, she was an avid hometown Chicago Cubs fan. She was known for her rum balls, bingo reign, Rummikub prowess, and for running the poker table. Dorothy adored sitting outside with her fur friends “Max” and “Fred”.
She will be remembered for always having a kind, loving, and supportive word for anybody she spoke to.
Visitation will be held on Sunday August 8th from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home, 7812 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL 60714. Dorothy’s final resting place will be at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles (pending).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in loving memory of Dorothy to Wright-Way Pet Rescue at (https://wright-wayrescue.org/donate-wwr), or donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.

She was a resident at The Sheridan of Park Ridge for sometime and was very kind to my mom. She sat with my mom at meals and kept her company and made sure she was well taken care of. She was a very kind and caring person. She will be missed.

We were Dorothy's neighbors and friends for 54 years. She was always available to answer a question or give a helping hand when asked. Her caring ways and knowledgeable answers were greatly appreciated. We are grateful that she opened her heart and her home to us and to others. May God bless and welcome her to her heavenly family. Love, Joan and Bob Czerlanis
