BREWSTER — Dorris Moody Clapp, a native Cape Codder, was born Feb. 23, 1909. She died peacefully on April 6, 2010, at the Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster, Mass.

She was the daughter of Blanche Ryder Moody and George Munsell Moody, who was the first fire chief in the town of Harwich. Her husband, Robert Jerrold Clapp, died in 1990. She leaves two sons, Dr. Carl Clapp of Harwichport and Dr. Ronald Clapp of Mariaville, Maine; a sister, Eunice Staats of Harwich; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Dorris attended the Harwich schools. She was awarded the Brooks Medal for citizenship and was active in Girl Scouts. She worked as a telephone operator in the old Harwich Exchange Building.

After attending Wilfred Academy and working in Boston she opened the Dorris Beauty Shop in Harwichport, the first year-round beauty shop on the Cape between Hyannis and Province-

town. She eventually opened a second shop in Orleans.

After retiring in 1962, Dorris pursued her interest in fine arts painting and took a correspondence course with the Norman Rockwell Famous Artist School in Connecticut. She studied with, among others, Jean Wilson of Tubac, Ariz., and Robert Brooks of Hyannis.

A gifted artist in all mediums, she is known for her oil paintings depicting old buildings and historic scenes of Harwich. Her landscapes and portraits have won awards at the Cape Cod Art Association.

She is a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.; the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Guild of Harwich Artists.

Dorris is an honorary member of the Mondanite Club of Harwich.

A memorial service will be held on May 8 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Harwich Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church, Main Street, Harwich, MA 02645.

I remember stories told by my late father, William Chapman who showed his paintings with Dorris through the Guild of Harwich Artist. He always spoke of her kindly and with much respect. Please accept sympathies from the Chapman family.
