I grew up going to the POW meetings and loved to hear Doug's stories. He always had this amazing sense of humour and could see the light in any situation. Growing up in a society of item-driven people, it was honouring to see how grateful Doug was for just soup and sandwiches. It helped me remember how easy I have it and that it was people like Doug that make my life possible. He will be missed dearly. My thoughts and love goes to Dorothy and his family.

My mother, Evelyn Bohannon, lived down the street from the Hawke's family and spent lots of time together growing up. Doug got in touch with my mother prior to her death in 2007 and came to our family farm for a cup of tea and to remember stories from their growing up years. It was like having two history books in my kitchen listening to them talk. I was glad that I was able to meet Doug. Doug will be greatly missed. My condolences to Dorothy and his family.
Sincerely,
Anne Bohannon

Lost a link to our past on February 2nd. I've always considered him to be my own 'Papa' Doug. Will miss him. Thinking of ALL the Hawkes right now.

The Hawkes family and the McCalla family share so much history and life together. Doug remembered my father, Bus, being brought home as a new baby to the house on Talon Avenue in Calgary. Doug and my Uncle Pete were lifetime friends until Uncle Pete passed away. Doug regaled us with stories of our families and nurtured the bond that continues to this day.
We miss him ......

We will miss Doug's sense of humour at CREB's Past President's dinners every year. He always made us smile and reminded us to be thankful for our Veterans.
