The Grandad I Knew...

The Grandad I knew had many first names,

The Grandad I knew would fall asleep during hockey games.

The Grandad I knew was proud to be in the Navy,

The Grandad I knew had hair that was curly and wavy.




The Grandad I knew swore by “Sufferin’ Cats!”

The Grandad I knew had many hats.

The Grandad I knew wanted to get lost, then find his way back using TomTom,

The Grandad I knew liked to relax under a shady tropical palm.




The Grandad I knew wanted to stay out in a storm,

The Grandad I knew was never cold, but always warm.

The Grandad I knew demanded his turn to talk at the table,

The Grandad I knew always made sure everything had a label.




The Grandad I knew drank his coffee black,

The Grandad I knew ate frequent snacks.

The Grandad I knew mostly painted lighthouses,

The Grandad I knew never killed the babies of the mouses.




The Grandad I knew hated it when you didn’t let him finish his sentence,

The Grandad I knew loved his independence.

The Grandad I knew laughed until he cried,

The Grandad I knew won big, and about the amount he lied.




The Grandad I knew liked doing things his way, especially when driving,

The Grandad I knew loved to watch the seagulls flying.

The Grandad I knew made us laugh when he ate something sour,

The Grandad I knew enjoyed taking care of his flowers.




The Grandad I knew always used Dippity-Doo,

The Grandad I knew made “air holes” in his slipper shoes.

The Grandad I knew, at family dinners, liked to catch buns,

The Grandad I knew always, ALWAYS had fun.

Dear Hopper family members,
my heart aches for you all at the loss of your lovely husband, father, grandfather, Doug whom you'll miss so much.

Granddad

We’ve come together today to pay our respects and send our love to a very wonderful man.
Each one of us has a special relationship with Doug, Dad or Granddad and it’s special because he always made us feel that way. He’s remarkable man with an amazing spirit that shone through daily. Filled with kindness, compassion, love and humour he showed us what was important in life, family. He lived life to the fullest, busy every day and always ready to lend a helping hand. Granddad taught us to live our lives with honour in a fun loving way and to rely on each other in times of need.
How proud we are of Granddad and his service in the Royal Canadian Navy, we relished in hearing the stories from that time of his life. It was an important foundation for the man that Granddad became. Nov. 11th will truly be a Remembrance Day for all of us.
We’ve all heard the stories about a mischievous young man that Granddad was and how through his love of Grandma he settled down. But there was always that sparkle in his eyes showing an Irish spirit was close at hand. Teamed with Win they prospered and had a wonderful life. With three children and six grand children their willingness to compromise for the sake of harmony ensured their success.
Granddad was lucky enough to work at Hamilton & Son’s, with people who meant so much to him, again many of them family. The bonds with the family reinforced everyday showing Granddad’s priorities.
The love between Granddad and Grandma was like no other. Granddad was everything a husband could be and it showed in the devotion and unparalleled adoration of Grandma, spanning over 63 years. As a father and grandfather he set the bar high and I feel lucky to have experienced this first hand.
How many Grandfathers can boast a standing Saturday morning date with the men of the family? Wow, on the odd occasion when I crashed the ‘party’ I could see people look at the 3 generations of men, with envy………..little did they know that this was not an unusual event but was the same most Saturdays. Love like this is not the norm, that much I know. Granddad was the foundation and I’m sure this tradition will continue, Granddad in attendance, with heart and soul.
Granddad was always there to lend a helping hand with his grandchildren. A ride needed home from school, to an event, from concerts, plays, hockey, baseball and soccer. We were very proud of our family participation; the support was the envy of many.
As a family we were very lucky to have had some very special holidays together. We all survived a hurricane in Cozumel and decided a Hawaiian cruise was a better choice on our second family holiday……..most recently we were together for Chelsea’s wedding, in Saskatoon. All of us were so happy to have the special opportunities to spend time with Granddad and Grandma.
As the head of the Hopper clan it was evident that Granddad passed a specific characteristic down to the next generations He was always interested at acquiring the newest ‘toys’. Not to be outdone, Granddad had the newest TV, yes, a 1080P HD TV with PVR, the most advanced digital camera with printing capabilities and the latest, most exciting of all technological advances, the TOM TOM GPS! Granddad had many hours of fun and enjoyment with his toys!
The theme is the same no matter what part of the family you are from; Granddad holds a special place in everyone’s heart and we will ALL miss him dearly.

Travelled on, without fear.
Whispering winds have hushed you away.
We saw you peaceful as you lay,
It's hard for us to have you go.
Our wonderful memories will help us so,
Thoughts of you will bring a smile each day,
Our Granddad is in our hearts to stay.
