Douglas Cundey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2022.
Douglas Haigh Cundey 61, of Bridgewater, NJ passed away August 28. Born March 12, 1961, to Albert Haigh Cundey and Katherine Broeker Cundey, Doug was raised in Essex Fells, NJ.

Doug attended The Pingry School from 7th - 10th grade, and attended The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT, from where he graduated in 1979. He received his bachelor's degree from Denison University in 1983, where he was an All American member of the men's varsity swim team for four years, and a record holder for the college in four events. Doug's love for the water stemmed from the summers the family spent in Mantoloking, NJ where he was a lifeguard at South Beach during high school and college. He continued his summers at the shore as an adult, and spent many years with his own children at South Beach - his favorite place.

Doug knew exactly what he wanted in a career when he was growing up - he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and work on Wall Street. He began his career in the equity research department at Smith Barney and a few years later went to work at Wertheim Schroder as a stockbroker - his dream job. He spent the next 30 years combining two skills that he adored - picking stocks and forming relationships - the first 20 years as a stockbroker, and the last 10 years of his career at Citigroup and Gilford Securities as an asset manager.

Doug was 'wired happy,' as his brother David always said, and that was apparent to everyone who encountered him. His outlook and mood were positive no matter what was going on in his life, and he nurtured long lasting friendships from every phase of his life. He loved competition and was a gifted athlete in many sports during his adult life including golf, tennis, and paddle tennis. He was also an avid runner and a triathlete who participated in many races over the years.

Doug was an incredibly loyal friend with a huge heart who had many passions, but from the minute he became a father, nothing was as important to him as his children - Alison and Nick. Whether it was coaching them in the many activities they shared a love for, attending every single game, meet, or match they ever participated in, having long conversations with them about life, or simply spending time with them, there was never any question about the deep love, pride, devotion, and enjoyment he had for his children. When either child walked into the room, his expression would change instantly and he would light up with joy as he called out 'Peaaaa-nut!' for Alison, and 'Buddy boooy!' for Nick.

Doug was predeceased by his brother Jeff Cundey in 2018. He is survived by his parents, Haigh and Kie Cundey of Summit, NJ and North Palm Beach, FL; his daughter Alison Cundey of Boston, MA; his son Nicholas Cundey of Bethlehem, PA; his sister Kassie Means of Greenwich, CT; his brother David Cundey (Mary Ellen) of Summit, NJ and Mantoloking, NJ; his former wife Heather Cundey (John Bartlett) of Bernardsville, NJ; and his nieces and nephews: Trip, Katie, and Julia Means; Pilar, Charlotte, and Miles Cundey.

A celebration of Doug's life will be held Saturday, September 24 at noon, at the Bay Head Yacht Club, 111 Metcalfe St., Bay Head, NJ.

I´ll never forget hanging out and watching Rockford Files with you between J-Term swim practices in Florida. You made the Denison years truly "amazing"!

So fortunate to have known you and your friendship.

I knew Doug for more than 43 years. We were both lifeguards at the New Jersey shore. We guarded at different beaches, but our parents owned homes in the same town ie Mantoloking, which is where I first met Doug. Doug was an exceptionally gifted swimmer, and broke and held many records in college. In my "heyday", I won two bronze medals in a state competition, but Doug was a far more talented and a gifted swimmer than I ever was which included raw speed. His father spoke of his swimming prowess at the Bay Head Yacht Club, during Doug's memorial ceremony, but people may have thought it was merely a father boasting about his recently departed child, and the information stated may not have been completely accurate. Let me be clear. Doug was a uniquely talented, gifted swimmer. His water skills were exceptional. Period! Doug was also fearless. He and I would swim during northeast storms when the beaches were closed. I told him that my back could be broken, by some of these monster waves, if I were to misjudge or make a mistake, to which he promptly asked me if I were chicken!
I had been an atheist most of my life until I experienced things that could not be explained by the natural laws of science. I now believe in the existence of a higher power, and Doug did as well, at the time of his death.
As he lie dying at the Robert Wood Johnson hospital, Doug called me, and wanted to "kick my butt" in a swim race, and was hoping to find a pool at the hospital. I told him I was on my way, and would soundly "whip his butt" if he could find a pool. We laughed and talked for 2 hours at the hospital.
I truly believe that Doug is in a better place than we can even imagine. Doug you are on for that next race, so I hope you are practicing big guy. All the best until we meet again! And yes I will kick butt!

Doug was our next door neighbor while we lived on Farley Road. I remember the first day I met him shortly after he and heather bought their house. Doug was gregarious, and came over to our house to share a cigar at night after work. His parties at his house were fun and he just plain to be fun around. He will be missed .
