I´ll never forget hanging out and watching Rockford Files with you between J-Term swim practices in Florida. You made the Denison years truly "amazing"!
So fortunate to have known you and your friendship.

I knew Doug for more than 43 years. We were both lifeguards at the New Jersey shore. We guarded at different beaches, but our parents owned homes in the same town ie Mantoloking, which is where I first met Doug. Doug was an exceptionally gifted swimmer, and broke and held many records in college. In my "heyday", I won two bronze medals in a state competition, but Doug was a far more talented and a gifted swimmer than I ever was which included raw speed. His father spoke of his swimming prowess at the Bay Head Yacht Club, during Doug's memorial ceremony, but people may have thought it was merely a father boasting about his recently departed child, and the information stated may not have been completely accurate. Let me be clear. Doug was a uniquely talented, gifted swimmer. His water skills were exceptional. Period! Doug was also fearless. He and I would swim during northeast storms when the beaches were closed. I told him that my back could be broken, by some of these monster waves, if I were to misjudge or make a mistake, to which he promptly asked me if I were chicken!
I had been an atheist most of my life until I experienced things that could not be explained by the natural laws of science. I now believe in the existence of a higher power, and Doug did as well, at the time of his death.
As he lie dying at the Robert Wood Johnson hospital, Doug called me, and wanted to "kick my butt" in a swim race, and was hoping to find a pool at the hospital. I told him I was on my way, and would soundly "whip his butt" if he could find a pool. We laughed and talked for 2 hours at the hospital.
I truly believe that Doug is in a better place than we can even imagine. Doug you are on for that next race, so I hope you are practicing big guy. All the best until we meet again! And yes I will kick butt!

Doug was our next door neighbor while we lived on Farley Road. I remember the first day I met him shortly after he and heather bought their house. Doug was gregarious, and came over to our house to share a cigar at night after work. His parties at his house were fun and he just plain to be fun around. He will be missed .
