Douglas Gray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 8, 2018.
Douglas "Doug" Gray passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife and family by his side on January 8, 2018. Doug was born January 19, 1937 in Perth, Ontario, Canada. He was one of ten children born to Fleetwood and Bernice Gray. On September 21, 1957 he married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Keyes in Gananoque, Ontario, Canada. Together they had 3 children. After a long career with Firestone, he and Betty moved to Phoenix in 1984 for warmer climate. It was in Arizona he fell in love with woodworking. Doug spent many hours each day perfecting his craft and enjoyed making wooden items to give away to family and friends. Doug never met an enemy in his life and could strike up a conversion with anyone at anytime and find something in common. He was born with the "gift of gab" and loved talking with friends, woodworking, doing jigsaw puzzles and traveling the world with Betty by his side. Doug was preceded in death by both of his parents and brothers Jim, Mervin, Bill, Wayne and Lyndsey as well as Mother-in-law Luella Keyes and sister-in-laws Anne Keyes, Jean Laffrenier and Patricia Beaubien. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years Betty, his son Kevin Gray, daughters Debra Gray and Julie (Kurt) Schmidt, grandchildren Travis, Candaice, Alexis, Dylan, Shealyn, Nolan and Brynn. Great-grandchildren Isabella, Alex, Tony, Gabriella, Michael and McKenzie, brothers Archie and Don and sisters Marlene (Glenn) Richardson and Noreen Thomson. Brother-in- law Bob (Mary) Keyes, Ted Beaubien and sister-in-law Verna (Jack) Hughson as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and the most amazing great friends and neighbors in Sun City. Per his wish, there are no services planned.

Thank you Grandpa for always making me laugh. You had an incredible ability to do this even if I was having a bad day. One of your amazing talents was woodworking. I loved spending time with you in your shop, and treasure the desk and piano bench you made me. I admire your strength and perseverance. You overcame challenges which are insurmountable to so many. And I loved how much you did for others; from fixing things for friends, to taking elderly neighbors to go get groceries. I miss and love you very much ❤

Dear Julie,Debbie and Kevin
Our hearts go out to you with the recent loss of your dear Dad. We had the privilege of spending some time with your Mom and Dad while they lived in Ottawa and later at Aunt Marlene and Uncle Glenn's cottage. Doug's great sense of humour and positive attitude always came though and clearly that must have gotten him over many hurdles. The 10 children were all very unique in their personalities but one common thread was their determination to face life head on and their Love of family. May the special memories you have of your Dad live forever in your hearts and inspire us all.
Love Brian and Anne Gray

My condolences. Though we had never met, I can imagine Doug to have a great sense of humour as did my Grandpa Wayne! No doubt he will be missed by many.
