Dear Best Dad Ever,
I wish I could tell you how well Greg's front yard irrigation project is going. You would look at me with a smile and raised eyebrows if I told you he is not having Irrigation Irritation! Miss you everyday,
Love,
Susie

I just heard of Doug's passing. He was my grad advisor at the U of A, and a wonderful man. I am bereft.

Farewell dear friend. I thank you for so many wonderful memories of Southern Arizona history, visions of Mesa Verde I finally visited with you in mind and good Mexican food.

I have many very fond memories of Doug. Among them was my role in introducing Doug to Bill Shockley, the inventor of the bipolar transistor, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize while he was at Bell Labs. Soon after that, Bill left Bell Labs to set up a company in Palo Alto that would make bipolar semiconductor devices. Bill especially liked to have a hamburger for lunch at a place called Kirk's on El Camino Real in South Palo Alto, close to Bill's lab. So Doug and I met Bill there. We enjoyed a wide ranging conversation, initially about Doug's thesis on avalanche transistors leading to a paper that the three of us wrote; but then about many other things, including a shared interest in how things work. We were very interested in having Doug stay on our faculty at Stanford after his PhD, but he chose Arizona. We still have and enjoy a book that Doug sent me about photographing Mesa Verde with his wife Shirley and their great friends the Howards. Our entire family will miss Doug and Shirley and their engaging hospitality, beginning with visits to Moab. His was a life well lived.

Bill and I were sad to learn of Doug´s passing. We have great memories of times spent with Doug and Shirley at their cabin in Moab where Doug prepared his recipe of Eggs Versailles while we listened to the sounds of classical music. We enjoyed time together researching and re-photographing archaeological sites first photographed by Gustaf Nordenskiold in 1891 at Mesa Verde National Park. That effort eventually led to a museum exhibit and a book. Doug put together fascinating "snipe hunts" where he shared historical research and took us to spots in the desert where history had actually occurred. We enjoyed those adventures "doing history with dust on our boots." We went on a great camping trip along the Camino del Diablo, just north of the Mexican border, discovering all sorts of historic spots. We will miss Doug, but will always remember the happy adventures he shared with us.

We met Doug on a couple of occasions and enjoyed his company. He was kind, thoughtful and good natured. He advised Milton to always let people know that he had earned a PhD and that should he be accorded the respect that it signified. We respect his many achievements, especially the children he raised. Scott, Susie and Bob; you have our deepest sympathy in the passing of your father. Love, Milton and Laurel Bloombaum
