Douglas LLOYD Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Oct. 17, 2016.

LLOYD, Douglas Michael
December 9, 1960 – October 14, 2016
Passed away suddenly on October 14, 2016 at the tender and vibrant age of 55. Survived by his beloved and loving wife Anne MacDonald; daughters Emma Rhiannon (Sergei Ossokine) of Berlin, Germany, Mary Rhosyn (Mark Lister) of Ottawa and son Graydon Dombowsky of Ottawa; Beloved Brother Stewart McBean (Deb) of Kingston, ON; mother Delores (aka Dolly) (nee Robillard) of London, ON; and sister Pilsu-qua, of London, ON. Doug was recently predeceased by his father, Kenneth Douglas Lloyd of London, ON. Doug was delightedly looking forward to a new chapter in his life, as a doting Grandpa to Mary and Mark's child-to-be, affectionately called "Nugget." Doug will be greatly missed by his best friend and hiking-buddy extraordinaire, Joe Albert (Catherine). Recently, after many years of their joyfully happy relationship, Doug was thrilled to marry his longtime love, Anne, in a private and intimate ceremony at home, in front of the fireplace, with Grady, Mary and Mark in attendance. It was a perfect day. Doug was an independent consultant for many years, running his company, Cambrian Consulting. In the early days, his areas of expertise included Project Management (in particular Major Crown Projects), Strategic Advice, Procurement, and even Unix scripting and testing. Doug joined the Public Service later in life and held many fascinating positions including leading the Financial Systems Authority (TBS), and as the Chief Financial Officer at the Immigration and Refugee Board. Doug's last position at the Department of National Defense (DND) brought him great pleasure. There he filled multiple Director General roles including Infrastructure, Environment and Engineering Services, as well as Nuclear Safety and Fire Safety. Working at DND was like returning home for him as he was so proud of the many happy, formative years he spent as a young man in the Army Reserves. Doug also served as a Trustee for Zone 4 of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board from 2008 to 2010, somehow fitting a part-time job into his already busy work life. He always ensured he was there for his family and made it look pretty easy in the process. It was this work that helped Doug to earn a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubillee medal. In keeping with his giving nature, Doug invested countless hours mentoring others, both professionally and personally. He happily provided guidance, his wisdom, natural leadership, and a willingness to invest time in others that was to the benefit of all who knew him. Doug's highly active mind inspired him every day to understand and seek answers to small and large questions, and virtually every challenge in between. That big, beautiful brain also meant that Doug would, on occasion, surprise us with a change of direction and seek out a new career path with new things to learn. In his late 30s, after years of successful consulting, Doug started and completed his MBA at the University of Ottawa. In his 40s he earned his Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation and, just one year ago, Doug successfully defended his PhD thesis, "AN N-DIMENSIONAL MODEL FOR PREDICTING SUCCESS AND FAILURE IN CANADIAN INDUSTRY," at Szent István University, in Budapest, Hungary, proudly achieving the highest possible honours. He was also a talented guitar player and loved technology gadgets and toys with the curiosity and glee of a youngster. Doug lived and loved large. A brilliant man with a razor quick sense of humour and timing, Doug delighted in the company of his family, friends and co-workers. Doug's tireless energy had him bounding through the office hallways and his personality filled any room he was in. He cared about people, was an inspiring leader, and tried to affect positive change wherever he could. Today, there is a shocked vacuum in the many lives Doug touched. Tomorrow and forever, there will be warm reflective smiles upon the faces of everyone who were blessed to know the man, be loved by him, and count him as a friend. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre (2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa) from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. A Celebration of Doug's Life will be held on Thursday, October 20 in the Pinecrest Chapel at 4:30 p.m. A Reception will follow. Doug always loved fresh flowers. In celebration of Doug, we encourage friends to send flowers, or else make a donation to the charity of their choosing. Online condolences may be made at www.colefuneralservices.com.

It's Summer 2017, and by accident, I had just found out of this news. I'm just in shock. He was a mentor to me, and a friend. Both him and Anne were. There are no words to describe that empty feeling when an amazing bright light has gone dark. His memory will never fade.

My deepest condolences ... Douglas was a wonderful human being. I had the privilege of discussing Doug's dissertation with him, while he was writing it. His advice and insights have had a profound impact upon me. I will never forget his Spiderman cufflinks. Doug was taken from everyone far too soon and will deeply be missed.

Dear Anne and Family - I only met Anne once and never had the privilege to meet others of you but I have heard many stories over the years. I am sorry you will receive this so late because Doug was the truly amazing treasure described in his obituary. We worked together at TBS and stayed in touch over the past few years. I had seen him not a week or two before and we were to go for lunch. And now we never will. I am so terribly, terribly sorry - it is just a straight up loss of an extraordinary person who should have kept on amazing us into ripe old age. All care.

My deepest condolences on your loss of this terrific man. I had the privilege of working with Doug on a number of projects and he always had a joie de vivre for the work and more importantly for the team he worked with (especially when wearing his colourful socks). Doug was taken way too soon and will truly be missed.

Dear Anne & Family,

He was an inspiration, very positive and so zestfully full of life. I will miss the laughter, the knowledge, and so much more. God Bless you all.

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord

Dear Anne and family,

I am extremely saddened to learn of Doug's passing and wish to pass along my sincere condolences. As one of my first bosses in the public service, he was funny, jovial, supportive and always challenged me to be at my best. His door was always open and always took the time to listen and provide advice. He made a big impression on me in a very short period of time. I'm proud to have been one of his "minions".

Thanks for everything Doug.

My deepest sympathies to Anne and family. I worked for Doug at DND. It did not take long to know that Doug was a one of a kind. He was so full of life, and it was clearly obvious how much he loved Anne and his family. I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to have met Doug. Today's service was beautiful and a perfect tribute. Doug may be gone but he will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. May you find comfort in all of the wonderful memories that you have.

Dear Anne and family,

Doug was larger than life and why his passing is difficult for me to process. He was a continuous learner and always on the cusp of something new. He was a breath of fresh air in many stuffy places! He was gifted and he shared his gifts with others, as I learn from reading the guestbooks.

I will remember him when his eyes shone must; when speaking of you and your brood with such pride and love.

With heartfelt sympathy,

I was shocked to learn of Doug's passing. Doug and I worked together at the Office of the Comptroller General for several years. I was always amazed at his vast base of knowledge that went far beyond financial and project management. One of the things that made Doug special was his willingness to share this knowledge and his experiences with others- always made more colourful by a story or two. My deepest sympathies.

Doug was a dear colleague and the only one with whom I could share quirky Brit issues, and Welsh and Cornish traditions. Nothing was impossible and he was both caring and one who was always there to solve issues and move forward. His presence was deeply felt and he made a difference. Sending love and strength to Anne and family.

What a loss. To count the ways would fill this space and volumes more. I can only take comfort in knowing that whenever I will think of Doug it will instantaneously elicit a smile. Sitting beside him in a meeting, sharing a coffee or beer, or just chatting in the hall was always an educational and/or humorous adventure; never failed and I so looked forward to it. A good man; no, a great friend who will not be forgotten.

I am so saddened to hear about Doug's passing. Doug saw something in me back in the day when he gave me a promotion. At my every one-on-one with Doug, we started out by talking family and Doug listened attentively to my proud account of my daughter on the soccer pitch or in the swimming pool, and only then would we get down to business. Doug mentored me on teachings that I put into practice every day. Anne and family, please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences for your loss.

What a wonderful Obituary about an amazing guy. I was one of those people that Doug took time to mentor and advise. He helped me to make one of the most difficult life changing decisions in my life. He made a profound impact in my life and I must say I will forever be grateful for the time he took out of his busy schedule with me...because he didn't have to do so. I am saddened and actually cannot believe that he has passed. I wish Doug's family peace knowing that Doug was an incredible man, though it is obvious they already knew that. Safe travels Doug, and I look forward to seeing you again one day.

I worked at TBS from 2010 until December 2014 and had the pleasure of providing HR functions for Doug. Doug was quite the character and absolutely loved his staff. Just before I retired, Doug was in between his Refugee Board and DND positions and actually back at TBS. I enjoyed talking to him, and he was proud to show me pictures of the renovations he and his wife has recently undertaken at their home. I was shocked to find out yesterday that Doug had passed away. My sincere condolences to his family members and his best pal Joe.
