Kathy,
You and Doug were very dear friends when I was a young newly wed back at Texas A & I. I was thrilled when my boy David got to play under Doug later at Midland High School. I pray for you, Chad and Shae and I am so sorry for your loss. Doug is now a big Star on Gods' Home Team.

Mrs. McCutchen and family,
I am thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. Doug was a special person. I was lucky to have been able to work with him for 8 years. He was always there to support me and give me good advice. It was a priviledge to work for such a fine man. You should be very proud in knowing that he had so many people who loved and respected him for who he was and what he did. I will keep you in my prayers.

Kathy, Chad and Shae - there are no words that can provide the comfort or answers that I'm sure you seek. Doug was special! I consider it a privilege to have been able to be a student, colleague and friend of his. He was so supportive and genuine. He could be fierce and intimidating, but only when he had to be. Every time I talked to him he would go on and on about his family and how proud he was of the boys and their paths in life. Some special memories for me would include being the mascot, coaching softball under him, and definitely the halloweens that we'd bring the girls over.
I know your hearts are aching and I pray that as the days come and go, you will be able to find a little more peace than the day before. Be confident that you are in the prayers of many!
The service was beautiful and such a great tribute to a wonderful man that touched all those he came in contact with!!!
May God continue to give you strength in the days, weeks and months to come!!!

Much Love - Faye Daugherty Wallace (JD)

I was honored to be coached by Doug McCutchen at Midland High School in the mid-80's.
What a fine man and a wonderful example he was for all of us young men at MHS. He surrounded himself with a great supporting cast: Coaches Corley, Hagins,Quizenberry,Manship,Williams,Woods, Patterson, & Doc Dodson. All of them led by example, especially Doug.
I am thankful to the great I AM for having Coach McCutchen cross paths with me at such a transitional time in my life.He truly was an example in my life in ways he probably never knew.
Gods Blessings to Kathy, Chad, and Shae. I am so sorry for your loss of Doug. My heart is with you and trust that your names will be offered up in my admonitions to God for peace and comfort.

January 29, 2011

He was one of the very few coaches I had in my athletic career, whom I truly respected then, AND looking back. Many of them I respected at the time because they were authority figures. But most of those I do not respect looking back at the dysfunctional manners which they had. Doug held you accountable, complimented your good traits, and encouraged them by a sincere care for each of us which permeated his spirit and that of those whom he engaged. To the McCutchen family my heart, thoughts and prayers goes out to you during this rough time. God has truly gained an Angel. 2 Corinthians 5:8 tell us, we are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. God never makes a mistake, he will never put more on you than you can bear. I was a player of Coach McCutchen and a student of Mrs. McCutchen. Coach made me the man I am today I have so many great memories of Coach he was an amazing man. Continue to keep your heads up May God Bless you all during this time.

My deepest sympathies to Doug's family. He was my first friend when we were both 4 years old.. we played up and down the dried up creeks of Bronte, we both were on the Little League Giants, and we spent many summers having fun, tanned to the max by an unforgiving sun.. He'll always live in my memories as a pal.

Kathy and Boys, please accept my heartfelt sympathy with Doug's passing. He was more than a Coach to those of us who played for him as Bobcats. While we have lost a true Gentleman, we were blessed to have him touch our lives. Godspeed.

May the grace of God shine on Doug, Kathy, and you his family. It was an honor to have known him. I always enjoyed our coversations concerning football and athletics, one "old school coach to another!" Few have had the ability to leave their mark on the history of Texas high school athletics as he did. What a blessing to have been a friend!

Kathy, Chad and Shae and the extended McCutcheon Family.
Coach Evans and I extend our sincerest sympathies to you on the
death of your Husband and Father. We were at Texas Tech 1970 to
1975 and remember Doug well from his time as a player at the Univ.
Also, we know that he had a wonderful career in coaching and as an
AD and a mentor to many young men. May he rest in peace and may
Perpetual Light shine upon him. May our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ bless each of you with wonderful memories and peaceful
hearts. May the prayers of your friends and the strengh of your faith
be the wings that will lift you up. With our prayers and love, Coach

He was just a pup when I started covering him while at the Texas Tech University Daily Newspaper. Later we continued while I was at Ch. 11 in Lubbock. The next three decades it was my honor to feature him and his teams on such shows as "Friday Night Heroes." But the special memories came from all the fieldhouse laughter and great stories we all shared. We both commented that we felt we were getting a great ride in life while coaching and broadcasting-things we would have both done for free. Doug was a treasure in my life and I told him many times that I loved him and was honored to have him as my friend. Get em son.

I did not know Mr. Mccutchen personally but everytime he called our office, I work for the Athletic Office for Lubbock ISD - he always made time to ask how I was doing. We mainly talked about the weather. I would let him know how bad we had and tell him I just wanted to warn him about it. Nevertheless, he always made me feel comfortable talking to him. I will miss our little conversations, his wishes to have a great day and his voice! To the his family I will keep you in my prayers!

Kathy, Chad and Shane,
Words are so tough for us to express. Your family has our deepest sorrow and sympathy. You guys left Amarillo and Tascosa High School with so many pleasant memories and touched so many lives. What fun we had not only playing football together but all the Air War fund raisers and joint efforts to build up our athletic program at THS. Doug was always so supportive and without his positive influence and experience we could not have achieved what we did. Please know that our prayers are with you and your family.

Our son, Al Celaya Jr., was a Bobcat in 1975 when Coach McCutchen was an assistant at Central H.S. Al played for the championship Angelo State football teams in 77, 78, 79 and 80. Al coached for Coach McCutchen in Midland in the late 70's and kept in touch with him all these years. He admired and thought the world of the coach. Coach McCutchen as always had a warm greeting when he saw my wife and I, and always inquired about Al and his career in coaching. Our very sincere condolences to Kathy and all the family. San Angelo has lost a great person, he will be missed.

From the burnt orange side of the stadium, I got to see Doug do his backfield dance when I was in school at the University of Texas! His successes as a player and coach are certainly impressive, but it appears that his greatest impact came later ... working with young folks across Texas. I think God probably has a "special duty" roster for folks like Doug. After learning more about him, I sure wish I had known him! In this time of sorrow, may God bless ya and keep ya.
