Douglas S. Moreland (82) of
Myrtle Beach, SC (formerly of
Upper Marlboro, MD) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 9, 2024, after suffering complications from advanced lung disease.
Doug was born Nov 23, 1941, to the late Carrie Kathryn and Richard Franklin Moreland, Jr. at his grandmother's house in Greenock, MD. He grew up in
Edmonston, MD with his four siblings, and graduated from Bladensburg HS in 1959. He spent most of his teenage summers working with his grandfather on the tobacco farm in
Lothian, MD, and attended the youth program at Mount Zion United Methodist Church on summer Sundays.
As a young man, Doug worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service while starting his family. He later entered the elevator trade in the early 70's and worked as an elevator mechanic while raising his daughter as a single father. A brother of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 10 for more than 30 years, he retired in 2003 and moved to
Myrtle Beach, SC.
Doug was a talented sportsman and athlete throughout his life. He played high school varsity football and basketball, enjoyed snow-skiing and ice skating, and was the best dancer, especially to Motown and 70's soul music! He was also an active league bowler at Riverdale Lanes as a young man, and pitched fast-pitch softball for nearly 40 years in the DC Metro area. He especially enjoyed golf, sometimes playing three times a week in his retirement. He was also an active supporter of youth sports, coaching his daughter's basketball & softball teams, as well as boy's basketball and football with the Prince George's County Boys & Girls Club. He also helped coach college women softball pitchers at Catholic University one year. Football and basketball seasons were very important in the Moreland house, and Doug was pretty serious about his football pools and NCAA tournament brackets. In fact, you had to limit your phone calls during tournament season ... no talking during game times! March Madness was one of his favorite times of the year!
Doug also loved hunting deer and wild fowl, and fishing; and, he enjoyed time with his parents on his father's boat the Tankay (and later the Tankay II) out of Galesville on the Chesapeake Bay. He supported Ducks Unlimited conservation efforts for many years. He truly loved being outdoors and enjoyed waterfowl art and wood carvings as well.
Doug is survived by his daughter Theresa "Trez" Moreland (Carolyn), his partner of 21 years Cecile Mandola, his sister Joyce Boswell, his brothers Richard F. Moreland III (Marianne) and Roger E. Moreland (Donna), his stepson Todd Ward, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James D. Moreland.
No services are planned at this time. Please raise a glass to remember and celebrate Doug in your own special way. Donations can be made in Doug's name to your local boys and girls club sports association or to Ducks Unlimited.
