Douglas Payne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Douglas E. Payne, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, leaving behind a life full of dedication, creativity, and quiet adventure. Born in Monroe, Wisconsin, Doug grew up in Lancaster and graduated from Lancaster High School. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country as an air traffic controller in the United States Air Force - a role that sparked a lifelong career in aviation, continuing at Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee.

After retiring from aviation, Doug followed his passions into new ventures. He was skilled in small engine repair and became widely admired for his craftsmanship in carving duck decoys. His beautifully detailed carvings found homes with collectors and outdoor enthusiasts all across the United States, each one a testament to his artistry and love of nature.

An avid fisherman, Doug knew the waters well - whether local lakes, northern Canada, or the rivers of Tennessee. He didn't just fish; he guided others with warmth and expertise, sharing his knowledge and joy of the sport with friends and acquaintances alike.

Doug will be remembered most for his gentle spirit, steady presence, and the deep bonds he formed throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by his closest and longtime friend Karen Rogers, and her family, whose devoted care and companionship sustained him in his final days. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Murphy, who shared a lifelong bond of family and love with him.

Doug's legacy lives on in all the lives he touched, all the wild birds he fed (especially the sandhill cranes!), and the hand-carved ducks that carry his spirit across the country.

A private remembrance will be held by close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a local wildlife conservation charity in Doug's memory.
