Douglas Scammell Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province from Jul. 5 to Jul. 6, 2007.

SCAMMELL _ Douglas Alan It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug on June 29th, 2007 after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. Doug is survived by his loving wife Cathy of 52 years; his three sons, Jim (Wendy), John, Dan (Colleen); his sister Joyce and his brother Gary. He was "Grumps" to all his wonderful Grandchildren. Doug was born in Port Elgin, Ont., May 6, 1934. There he excelled at both Hockey and Baseball. After moving to Toronto in 1955, he joined the Brokerage Business as a floor trader for Wills Bickle Wood Gundy. He came to Vancouver in 1967 and joined the firm of Hemsworth Turton, then in 1971 became a partner at Continental Securities. Doug finished his Brokerage career at McDermott St. Lawrence. Doug was extremely skilled and respected in his profession and in his life. In his spare time he spent many years coaching Hockey. Doug in the mid 80's turned his attention to Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1987 he and his wife went to New York to receive the Thoroughbred Breeders Award (TOBY) for Western Canada. Doug was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at Hollyburn Country Club, 950 Cross Creek Rd., West Vancouver, between 2 - 5pm on July the 8th. Anyone wanting to pay their respects is welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the B.C. Guide Dogs, 6050 - 44th Ave., Ladner, B.C. V4K 3X7.

My thoughts go to his family during a difficult time. Mr. Scammell was a strong kind man who always put his family first. I was very saddened to hear the news.
