I knew Melanie and Doug through the Maplewood days and also because Melanie played the cymbals in the One More Time Band and other bands. She always told me that if I didn't see her playing with the band, she was having more fun doing something else. I was able to go to her service but missed Doug's. The band played in Disneyland and Disneyworld and it was always an experience. Doug helped to carry a banner or a flag when we were in Mickey Mouse town. At the end of one parade, Doug was so excited and he said that was the most fun he had ever had! So, you know he had fun. My son was in Sonja class and a big deal was a field trip to Jakes for Clam Chowder. He came home and said, why don't we eat at Jakes more often? We miss Mel and Doug and know their kids were loved. Those were the times. RIP

Today I was saddened to learn of Doug's passing via a University of Idaho publication received in the mail. Doug was a Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brother at UI. He was a very positive person, and his good nature made the living group a better place. Blessings to Doug and to his family.

Dear Sonya and Rory;
My heart goes out to you and the rest of your families for your loss. Your dad was one of the best. I learned so much from him during the many years I spent at, well, many of the restaurants.
Be kind to yourselves and remember there is joy in every day. Sometimes just a little harder to find, but speaking from recent experience, I know this to be true.
Love and Light;

My best friend's son is gone. What can be said of such a fruitful life now past. My tribute to Doug is to help his father, 94 years yesterday, make his goal of at least 99.3 years. The age his father passed. He would trade that in an instant if his son could make that goal for him but that choice is not ours or his. On Saturday I will plant a flowering tree in Doug's memory that his father can see blossom once again and remind him of all the good times they shared as he watched him grow in the rolling hills of The Palouse.

Isn't is strange that Princes and Kings and Clowns that frolic in sawdust rings, and common folk like you and me are keepers of eternity?
To each is given a bag of tools, a lump of clay, a book of rules.
For each to make, ere life has flown, a stumbling block, or a stepping stone.
RIP Doug and thank you for being a stepping stone for me.

Doug was more than just a great boss, to who I owe a fabulous career; he was a great human being and Godly mentor. Hard working and driven in business, but balanced with a tremendous sense of humor, compassion, Christian and family values. Doug, and of course Melanie were just loving, joyful people to be around. Valerie and my prayers are with Rory, Sonya and the entire family. Our deepest sympathies are with you.

Doug was one of the most impressive men I have ever met. I have had the privilege of being part of McCormick's management team for 12 years, many of those when Doug was at the helm. His leadership was inspiring, his love for his community and family unparalleled, and his generosity limitless. Bless you Doug and thank you for sharing your life with us and inspiring us to be the best we can be.

Doug and Melanie became good friends/neighbors when they moved to Portland. My love to Sonya and Rory, I hope there is some comfort in knowing that your folks are together again and no doubt having a good time. You and your kids are truly blessed to have had them for parents/grandparents. Their legacy of love, empathy and hard work will follow you for all your days.

To Doug's Family-Doug was by far the nicest man you would ever want to meet! He knew every employee by their first name and always greeted you with a smile. I enjoyed working at corporate office with him. A great man who will be greatly missed!

To Doug's family
I met Doug on as part of ACFP board. I knew him and interacted with him primarily in that capacity. I watched as he dealt with the passing of his wife and then the knowledge of his own sickness. I was always amazed by his strength of character as he facd these tragic events.
Over my career I have sat on many boards and as such have meet many other board members. Doug was unique. He had the rare talent to communicate his thoughts w empathy and a lack of personal ego. He picked his spots and was always spot on. A very rare talent.
When I left the ACFP board I was on a mission to find another board that I could entice Doug to participate. While his insights would have helped make it a winner it was more for the opportunity to spend time with him over a glass of wine.
He spoke often of his life blessings and his family. It allowed me to reflect on my own life in the same vain. He faced tragedy with a deep sense of faith and resolve. He was a very brave man with deep faith.
A truly remarkable man and one not often found in my line of work.
I unfortunately am unable to travel these days and will miss meeting you in person and conveying my condolences.
The world has lost a great man.
My prayers are with you and your family.
Elan

Dear Rory and Sonya; Grandpa Don, Paul, and Greg: Heartfelt condolences to you all from the Scheuerman family. Lois and I uphold you in our thoughts and prayers and are ever grateful for the enduring fellowship between our two families that reaches back to our shared Old Country roots. As you know more than anyone, Doug's generous heart impacted legions of folks in need far and wide, and he was among the very first to sign on to support the Doorways to Hope (now Family for Every Orphan) ministry in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia after we first met about this in Colfax about six years ago. There have been countless benefits from this work--about 5,000 children placed in homes in their own countries, and he and Mel were instrumental in getting it all launched. The Apostle Paul says, "I thank God for my every remembrance of thee," and so do we. Blessings, Dick and Lois Scheuerman

I hope Doug meets up with my little Italian partner, Jimella Lucas, who harkens from the old days of original Jakes. We had many adventures together as we helped build the reputation that created a legend. He was a kind man.
