Douglas STEWART Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on May 26, 2018.
STEWART, Douglas G.
On May 22, 2018, at the age of 62, Douglas (Doug) Stewart of Parkland County, was suddenly taken from us due to heart failure.
Doug is survived by his four children, Mandelle Williams, Jocelynn Stewart, James Stewart, and Nicole Stewart, and his two grandsons, Fenwick and Jesperdale Williams of Edmonton, AB, as well his two sisters, Marian (Wally) Campbell and Linda McDonald of Medicine Hat, AB. Doug is lovingly remembered by his long-time friend and companion, Laura Lawson of Golden, BC. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Doug was born March 20, 1956, in Craik, SK to his parents, Douglas Sr. and Inez Stewart.
Doug grew up in Regina, SK where he participated in the Regina Lion's Marching Band playing the clarinet, and played high school basketball, and developed his love of restoring classic cars and all things mechanic. Doug graduated from Thom Collegiate High School in Regina in 1974. Doug moved to Edmonton, AB in 1980 with his young family, and joined the Edmonton Fire Department in 1982.
Doug loved the outdoors including cycling, skiing, hiking, camping, and basketball in the driveway with his grandsons. Doug's loyal side-kick, Molly the dog, could always be found by his side for his many adventures.
In 2013, after 31 years of service, Doug retired as a Captain in the Fire Department, and he had since spent his time between his acreage lot in Parkland County and his second home in the Columbia Valley of the Rocky Mountains where he loved spending time outdoors.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 29 at 3:30 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton for those wishing to pay their respects. Cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edmonton Fire Fighter Burn Treatment Society (www.efbts.ca), Suite #1, 7024 – 101 Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6A 0H7.

Doug & I met when he was in Grade Ten in Regina. We were buddies from the early 1970's until his passing. Although he moved away from Saskatchewan in the 1980's, he always did lots of trips and visits back to his friends and family here. I am so thankful that we kept in touch over the years. I am a better person because I knew Douglas Stewart. I will miss him.

On behalf of the Edmonton FireFighters Memorial Society, please accept our condolences on Doug's passing.
Please know that he will be missed greatly. Although I have never had the pleasure in working with Doug, talking to several members and retirees who did he was a very well respected member of our department.
We want to give your family time to grieve your loss but if you could please mark Sunday September 9th 2018 on your calendar, as that will be the day of our Annual Remembrance Ceremony.
It will be the day that we remember all those members that we have lost in the past year.
It is also a very special ceremony as we have the family members of those members involved in the event itself.
It gives us all a chance to say goodbye and it helps with the closure as well.

If I could have a family member to contact me at 780-619-1564 or at [email protected] then I can get back to them and we can talk about arrangements for this years ceremony.

In closing, please accept our deepest condolences on your loss and know that Doug will be missed.

I worked with Doug for a few years. We went skiing together at marmot and I enjoyed the conversations while riding the chair. We were also the two people first on scene at a tragic accident of a marmot staff member years ago.
I remember he always was tinkering on some car and despite some quirks was a good man.
May he now be able to eat onions and endlessly drive without having to do repairs.

Saddened to learn of Doug's passing.I think it would be fair to say he sometimes swam against the current. His heart was always in the right place. His family was always first and the less fortunate being second. It was a pleasure to work with Doug and I will miss his stories, idea's, and smile.

My deepest condolences to the Stewart family.
I was fortunate enough to work with Doug over the years while on the Fire Dept. and enjoyed those times.
Doug was interesting and not afraid to speak his mind. That's probably why we got along.
He definitely was taken too soon!
He will be missed!

Doug was a EFRS classmate when we started in 1982. Doug lived with me for about a year. This is when I learned his love for cars and anything mechanical. Unfortunately I will be out of town for his celebration of life. Doug you will be missed by many and my heart goes out to your family and friends.
