1956 – 2014
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Doug on Monday, Jan 13, 2014, at the age of 57. Doug was predeceased by his father Alfred Taylor, mother Edith Ordish, step father Ron Ordish and brother Donald Taylor. Doug is survived by his brother Brock (Wendy) Taylor, niece Becky (Brian) Clarke, nephew Caleb (Tanya) Taylor, grandnephews Braden, Dawson and Nolan Clarke and grandnieces Natasha and Lyla Taylor. Doug was born in Regina on July 4, 1956. He attended Lakeview School, Sheldon Williams Collegiate and obtained a BA in sociology at the University of Regina. His first employment after university was a contract to write the history of SGEU. This was the first of a number of works he authored, edited or contributed to over the ensuing years. He then worked as a social worker for several years at Fort Qu'Appelle followed by a 20 year career at SGEU as an agreement advisor and communications worker. After retiring a few years ago he found enjoyment in part time work as a communications worker with Lakeview United Church. He was a staunch activist, socialist and trade unionist all his life. When advised of his short life expectancy a week ago, he faced his pending passing with stoicism, courage and good humour, easing his final days for his family. He passed away peacefully with family at his side. As a brother, uncle and friend he will be greatly missed. We want to thank the staff at Grace Hospice for the care provided Doug during his short stay there. We would also like to thank his many friends who visited and spent time with him through his final days, sharing stories, memories and laughter. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, SK. In lieu of flowers, Doug requested donations be made to Lakeview United Church.

We arrived home from our trip south to find Doug's house being worked in. It turned out to be his family. His nephew Caleb informed us Doug had passed away while we were gone. We will miss him very much. He was a good neighbour, had a good heart and was a kind man. Rest in peace Doug

I wish to express my deepest sympathies to Doug's family . I knew Doug for about the past 12 years when I was involved with SGEU. He was a great mentor for me and many other trade unionists'. My condolences to Doug's Family. I attended Lakeview and Sheldon with Doug. I especially remember grade 6, when Doug got me interested in the Doc Savage series of books. I think he had the whole series and loaned them to me to read. My prayers are with the family

I was saddened to hear about Doug's recent passing, and am so sorry I missed his service. It pays to check your voice mail more than once a week, I guess. Doug and I were colleagues in Social Services, neighbors in Sandy Beach, partakers in the Lebret Hotel on our long bicycle rides home from work, and always always enjoyed a good yuk over something. We hadn't chatted in a number of years, but I know I shall miss him terribly. RIP, Doug!!

Brock, Wendy and family.
It is too sad to think that Doug is no longer with us. I just know that this world is better place because he was in it. I have fond memories and will always be grateful for the support he gave me when I worked temporarily at SGEU. Sorry I was unable to go to the funera. Doug was a great guy. He took me (fresh off the farm) under his wing and helped me to navigate the political waters of the SGEU. We did enjoy many late evenings of socializing those years and became good friends. I've attached a photo of a lake we went fly-in fishing at, where Doug could actually warble with the loons. We shared several good fishing trips to Errington, and one to Jim's Camp at Nistowiak Falls where your friends will never forget "the night of the onion". :)

I first met Doug through politics and the union movement. His continuing energy and commitment inspired many a campaigner. Most recently, I followed his activities maintaining and adding to the Next Year Country website. That, and other influences he brought to the struggle reached here in Alberta (Red Deer) where I live, as from time to time I would either cut and paste a piece from NYC or guide others to it.
Thanks to Doug for a life that was a great guide to activism.

I think one of his first jobs was as an organizer for RWDSU back in the days we fought off a raid by Fed affiliates, But that is old history, memories fade and times change. I first met Doug when he was a left, socialist student activist. He remained principled throughout his life. My condolences to his family and prairie comrades. I am shocked and sadden to hear of Doug's sudden passing. I had the privilege of working with Doug, as a fellow staff member with SGEU's National Union (NUPGE)in Ottawa. He was a real, down-to-earth person who lived and dedicated his life to working people. I will remember him for his warm personality and gentle strength. My condolences to his immediate family and his extended union family.

I am very sad to hear about Doug's passing. He will be missed by all; those he was closest to and those of us who only had the privilege to see him occassionally. Doug was a dedicated activist with many skills. He had a great sense of humour which was always used respectfully; even when he got you with a 'gotcha' you knew it was done with respect. I still remember the 1984 SGEU Convention where we launched Doug's history book of the union and where I was first elected President, the 1st woman to hold that position. After the congratulations were said Doug turned to me and said "Thanks for making my history book history. The book said there has never been a woman president and now you just proved that wrong!". I am very sad to hear about Doug's passing. He will be missed a lot; by those he was closest to and by those of us that may have only seen him occassionally. We were saddened to hear of Doug's passing. While we had met Doug a number of times socially we really knew Doug through his writing and the writing he
did with Lorne Brown. Doug was passionate about the contribution working people have made to the building of Canada as we know it - a Canada where democracy was broadened by the struggles of the working class. Doug made an important contribution towards recording the history of the struggle in this province for public health care and other reforms. The working class of Canada has lost a talented and devoted thinker and publicist.

I am so saddened by this. Doug has been such a great friend for so many years. He and I and Fraser all shared a passion for classic rock and went to many, many concerts with Doug.
