Douglas Truax Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 15, 2010.
TRUAX - Douglas Warren Truax was born in Grand Rapids in 1944 and died at his home in South Boardman, MI on March 21, 2010 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Grace; his daughter, Stephanie of Chicago; his sister, Janice (Dave) of Lawton, MI; and his brother, Ron (Susanne) of Colorado Springs, CO. His parents, Ralph and Virginia, preceded him in death. Doug graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and later took a degree in English from the University of Michigan. He worked for UM after graduating, embarking on a long career as a writer, editor and photographer. His love of the outdoors took him north where he worked as the editor of the Charlevoix Courier and published books through his Peach Mountain Press. He later managed a shop for the Orvis Sporting Goods Co. in Traverse City and then moved to Vermont where he was director of publications for Orvis. He returned to Traverse City as an editor for Countrysport Press and the on-line journal AllOutdoors. In the past 12 years, Doug and Grace operated Crofton Creek Press out of their home on 72 acres near S. Boardman, publishing many books and editing others. Doug wrote several books himself, in addition to writing the catalogs for the Woolrich Company. His outdoor photography is well-known and highly regarded. Doug lived a life devoted to his family, his dogs and the outdoors, particularly northern Michigan's woods and rivers. It was a life well-lived.

A book of photographs Doug gave to me is one of cherished possessions. I will miss his humor and wit. Sharing a cup of coffee with Doug was a memorable event.
