ETNA - Douglas A. Woodard, 59, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at his home. Doug was born Feb. 3, 1952, in Bangor, the son of Malcolm and Georgie (Allum) Woodard. He graduated from Hermon High School, Class of 1971, and married Polly Jo Davis Jan. 13, 1973. He was employed by the state of Maine Department of Transportation for 25 years, where he retired as maintenance supervisor in 1996. Doug was a devoted family man, friend and helpful neighbor. He was a compassionate and determined man, who was very driven, hard working and dedicated to maintaining the family farm. Doug was known for his sense of humor and helpful nature. He loved farming, carpentry, working with machinery and coin collecting. Always a student, he enjoyed learning through educational programs and studying astronomy with his telescope. He also loved nature and took pleasure in photographing fall and winter scenery. Mostly, he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends and lending a helping hand whenever needed. He will be lovingly missed. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Polly Jo Woodard of Etna; his daughter, Tyra Payne and her husband, Joe, of Hermon; his newborn grandson, Cayden; his mother, Georgie Woodard of Carmel; several brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Malcolm Woodard; several brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 2, with the Rev. I first met Doug when I started working at the Etna store, and always knew him as a kind hearted well liked person. As time went on I began a friendship with him... then later started dating ShaneShaw and he became Uncle Doug which just made him even better in my eyes. He was a very good man and will be missed by all who knew him.

For as long as I can remember "Uncle Doug" has been a man to look up too. Hard working easy to talk to and always smiling. He taught me many things and was role model, friend and as close to family as it gets. I will miss him more than I can express but take comfort in knowing that I am who I am today because I knew him..
