DOYLE RAY SLAYTON Sr. obituary, McAllen, TX

In memory of

DOYLE RAY SLAYTON Sr.

Add memories that will last forever

Not sure what to say?

January 14, 2015

Cathy,
I just heard today from Chris that Doyle had passed away last month.
If you don't remember us we lived in Leakey, Texas when Doyle coached at the school. We often thought about ya'll throughout the years and wondered how ya'll were doing. We live back in Leakey now and I have visited with Chris in Hondo and he stated ya'll were in Harlingen. My son remembers him well while he was coaching in Leakey and remembers Doyle Jr. being a great football player.
Our deepest prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this time. He was a very wonderful man and he really enjoyed coaching!!
---God Bless

To the Slayton Family, especially Cathy Slayton, whom I had the privilege to have worked with at Memorial Middle School, where I also met Doyle. I'm sorry for your loss but feel so fortunate to have met Doyle while he substituted at Memorial Middle School. As a coach myself, I really enjoyed the stories he shared when he too was coaching. Not only was he funny, but a genuine and a kind person. We all remember Coach Slayton as a football coach but one story that comes to mind is when he coached baseball in Zapata, Texas. I know that he loved what he did but most of all he loved the kids. He truly believed the hard work his athletes put in would make a big difference later in their lives. May God Bless the Slayton Family.

Coach was my husband's (Ervey Trevino) coach at Martin High School in Laredo and then at Tarkio College. Some of his other players from Laredo and Tarkio are at the service now. My husband and the rest of the guys were so fortunate to have Coach Slayton as a role model and father figure while they played for him in high school and college. If it wasn't for Coach Slayton a lot of these men may not have finished college. I am glad that they made the effort to go pay their respects in person. We are deeply indebted to him. May he rest in peace and our most sincere condolences to the Slayton family.

My son's dad is now resting in peace. I am so proud of my son Doyle, Jr. for being at his side when his dad was in the hospital and at the Rehab center. He and his wife and 3 granddaughters were the only ones at his side and called him daily.

My dearest and most sincere feelings to all of Doyle's family. I coached with Doyle in Santa Rosa where he was instrumental in developing and establishing the winning and working tradition for the Warriors that existed for years after. Knew Tracy as a baby and my heart felt condolences go to her and the rest of the family.
The Lord bless each and everyone of you.
