In Memoriam

Wilhelm Schulte

I met Allen in 1981 at the German Dept. at the University of Cincinnati.
Allen was one of those people you liked immediately, and his warmth and
generosity made a deep impact on many new graduate students that year,
especially the foreign graduate students. Over the years, long after our
graduate student days, Lily and I kept up the contact and friendship with
Allen, seeing each other either in Germany or in the US.

At a reunion in 2001, back in Cincinnati, Allen was one of those who worked
enthusiastically to bring the class of 1981 together again. As in the old
days, he was ready with anecdotes, reminiscences, recitations, and songs
(in both languages), to bring a spirit of performance to the joy of getting
together.

We kept in touch through the years, and through the time of his illness. Even when he had serious setbacks, he always seemed to rebound. We thought we would have many more
years in which to share good times, as only old friends can. Lily and I had talked with Allen about our coming to visit him in Cartersville next year. It is very sad that that will not
come to be. Our next trip to the US will not be the same without him.

Allen was a good man—someone with integrity and principles. Allen was good
fun—his gentle sense of humor, jokes, passion for collecting oddities, and
for singing all the great musical hits in a row, are all unforgettable. And
Allen was a good friend in the truest sense— kind, giving, loyal and
sincere. We miss him a lot. We wish this last goodbye had not come so soon.
