Dr. Barbara Ann Holmes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2024.
The world has lost a profound spiritual leader, scholar, advocate for justice, wife, mother, sister, and friend with the passing of Dr. Barbara Ann Holmes, who transitioned peacefully on October 15, 2024. Her life's work, a blend of activism, theology, and contemplative spirituality, leaves an enduring legacy that has touched countless lives across disciplines.

Barbara came into the world on September 9, 1943, in East Orange, New Jersey, to her parents Thomas and Mildred Holmes. As a young child, Barbara lived in New Jersey until the family moved to Connecticut where she attended junior and senior high school and was a member of Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church (UCC). Barbara graduated from the University of Connecticut where she obtained the first of many degrees. While there she was a cheerleader for the UCONN teams and attacked the role with true vigor and energy!! She briefly worked as a teacher in New Haven and Washington, D.C. Her interest and talent in acting enabled her to travel and explore the world as an actress in a Leonard Bernstein play in Europe and on stages in different venues in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia.

Her academic journey was as diverse as her life's work. She earned a Ph.D in Ethics from Vanderbilt University, a Masters in Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary, and a JD from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law. These achievements shaped her career as President of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota) and her time as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Memphis Theological Seminary.

Always ready to listen and support, Barbara would tell a funny story to make you laugh and smile. It is how most will remember her. Creative in all things Arts, Barbara painted as a young woman, always finding ways to show her creative passions. In one of her very early paintings, an image of two babies, one black, one white, each expressing a curiosity about the other, showed her thinking on equality and justice for everyone. She challenged traditional boundaries of religion, mysticism, and spirituality, creating space for more inclusive, cosmic views of existence, emphasizing the importance of justice as integral to spiritual life. Multi-talented, Barbara also tried her hand at tap dancing, macrame and wood carving, all with sincere enthusiasm! That was Barbara ... seeing life through her unique lens and sharing her perspective through art. Her sons, Jason and Marcus, inherited her love of the Arts. Jason is inspired by music and Marcus' talents are in cinematography.

Barbara also enjoyed the quiet life with her husband George, lake fishing on a nice day, spending time in their mountain cabin, writing, teaching, and listening to gospel music. Barbara embraced life with a combustion of energy, and she was blessed with a variety of talents not often found in one individual. "Babs" or "Babsie" is how she was known to those closest to her. She gave as good as she got and created her own original personal names for others to convey her deepest love for them.

A private collector of unique African Masks and Art, Dr. "B" as she was known in academic circles, had a library of books covering a wide range of topics. An accomplished professor and theologian, lawyer and counselor, her life's work left an indelible mark on the academic and faith communities, as she dedicated her career to exploring the intersections of African American spirituality, mysticism, and social justice. Dr. Holmes was known for her deep and thoughtful approach to spirituality in the Black Church, focusing on how contemplative practices could inspire both individual healing and collective action. Her books, such as Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church and Race and the Cosmos: An Invitation to View the World Differently, are considered groundbreaking works that examined spirituality through the lens of race, cosmology, and community. Through her teachings and writings, she encouraged others to rethink the traditional boundaries of religion and to recognize the power of contemplative practices in times of personal and communal crisis.

Barbara was not just an academic. She was also a committed activist and spiritual guide, working with homeless missions, HIV/AIDS support groups, and international ministries in Kenya and Japan. She committed her life to Christ at a Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) convention in August 1977. Her spiritual journey took her to Latter Rains Apostolic Church (Dallas, TX) and churches in Miami, Florida. Ordained in both the United Church of Christ (UCC) and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she embodied the idea that spirituality must be lived out in service to others. Her compassion and dedication to justice were constants throughout her life.

Dr. Holmes' work has been widely recognized for its ability to bridge the gap between contemplation and action. She believed that moments of crisis often serve as catalysts for spiritual growth and collective resilience. Her teachings continue to inspire those seeking to navigate the complexities of modern life with a sense of hope, justice, and purpose.

Dr. Barbara Ann Holmes leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband George Ford, her loving sons Jason Stokes and Marcus Stokes (Kathy), her siblings, Eileen Clay (Covington, GA), Susan Winfield (Washington. DC), Mildred Williams (Silver Spring, MD), Thomas Holmes (Atlanta, GA), and a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.

She will be remembered for her visionary leadership, her commitment to justice, and her ability to inspire both quiet reflection and transformative action. Dr. Barbara A. Holmes' legacy will live on through her writings, her students, and the countless lives she touched throughout her extraordinary life. May her soul rest in peace, and may her teachings continue to guide us through the unfolding mysteries of life. She will be missed deeply by her family and friends and we will keep her in our hearts forever ... until we meet again.

Dr. Barbara A Holmes was one of the most significant teachers I have ever had the honor to learn from. After reading her book, Joy Unspeakable, I wrote her to express my sincere appreciation for the profound insights she shared. She wrote me back! Her response started a correspondence that lasted for years, until the year of her passing. I've been blessed to not only meet and work with her, once accompanying her beautiful presentation on drums, but to also meet her beloved husband, George. Prayers of condolence and blessings to you and all your family George. And so many thanks to you, Dr B. I'll do my best to continue sharing your remarkable work with integrity, honesty, humor and compassion.

Joy Unspeakable:
A Reflection for Barbara

Barbara Ann Holmes was a gifted, brilliant, creative person whom we all love.

I Corinthians 12:12-27 gives is a framework of the Body of Christ and it can be likened to Barbara´s life. Let me read just a snippet of this word: I Corinthians 12:24b - 26 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)

(24b) "But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, (25) that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. (26) If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it."

Now in Barbara´s body - In her life - she had many members.

George, you came into Babara´s life in 2012 just before Mommy Holmes transitioned to heaven in 2013.
Barbara Loves you. You shared great times together. You shared her senior years and made fun times together moving across the country to Florida, fishing, and camping in Michigan. You were her husband and her playmate. PLUS: you allowed her to be her creative self.

Jason and Marcie, you allowed your Mother to be a Mother. To give birth to two wonderful sons whom she loves and adores.

Tommy, Millie, Susie, and Eileen - you were the foundational stones upon which Mommy and Daddy Holmes raised each of you. Barbara loves each of you. She knew that she could count on you to support her and to have her back.

Then there were the supporting cast Kathy Barrett Davis you joined in the early days of Barbara´s youth.

Kathi Randall you were selected to join the cast under the direction of Marcus Stokes.

I joined the cast in 1967 at 443 Norton Parkway.

Barbara enjoyed a stella professional career. She used 100% of her brain power to be all and do all that she accomplished - under the direction of the Holy Spirit, her Shepherd and her Guide.

But the most important thing to remember is Barbara Loves the Lord. She committed her life to Christ over and over again as she grew in her understanding of The Holy Spirit.

And that brings us to I Corinthians 13:8 which teaches us that Love Never Ends. Love never fails. Love is Eternal.

I Corinthians 13: 12-13 gives us the hope of eternal life:
(12) For now, we see only a reflection, as in a mirror, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known,
(13) And now faith, hope, and love remain, these three, and the greatest of these is love. (NRS-UE)

We who believe will see Barbara again. Barbara is now with the Ancestors. With Granny, and Daddy Holmes, and Mommy Holmes. With the Gullah Ancestors. And even with Lucky.

Let us celebrate Barbara´s life today. She has completed her course on earth. But she leaves a rich legacy in her writings, and podcasts, and in the way that she touched each of us.

Barbara now has a glorified body free from sickness and worry. Barbara has stepped into Eternity.

Well done thy good and faithful servant: thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. (Matthew 25:21)

Barbara stepped into Joy Unspeakable. The Joy Unspeakable of Eternal life in the Lord.

Barbara will always live as my admired independent and free first cousin who has always been an inspiration. Our Dads were super close. So that meant, I was always aware of the super bond between us. Her writing opened doors that led me to believe that I could also climb the mountain of writing and being published. Thank goodness I had time with Barbara a year ago celebrating her birthday. Thank goodness also for the joy and laughter that came from Barbara inviting me to be on her podcast. Barbara will live in my dreams and in my work forever.

I was blessed to have her as a Living School teacher. I was truly and deeply touched by her courage to claim her mystic self and uplift it in all of us! She will live on as a deeply personal and prophetic Being full of love, openness to transformation, courage and grace.
I offer much gratitude for her life on earth she will have continue having a lasting effect on. I send a joyful dance to celebrate her ongoing journey

Deepest condolences, she was a remarkable woman. I first started reading the daily meditations from CAC during COVID (great suffering). I don´t remember what she was quoted about in the meditation but I do remember being thunderstruck. After that, every time she was quoted I anticipated a similar reaction and was always had one. This world is certainly a better place for her having lived in it. I am looking forward to meeting her someday!

As a long distance follower & supporter of CAC I have been blessed by so many I have never met. And yet, spiritually know. I remember seeing a sweet video of Barbara fishing off a dock with George. I laughed as she said she relied on him to put the worm on her hook. Felt instant connection, a sharing of sameness. And I laughed

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. As I read Dr. Barbara's contribution to a Center for Contemplation and Action daily message about a year ago, i saw my life as a spiritualist and as a follower of Jesus clearly reflected. I was delighted and wrote to Dr. B and told her a little of my story. She responded immediately and warmly asking me how I was going to leave a legacy regarding this story. My gratitude is deep for Dr. B, her writing and her unforgettable message to me.

Dr.B and my mother shared a name, a birth year, and a deep belief in the interconnectedness of African spiritual traditions throughout the diaspora and the indigenousity of Christianity. My mother passed in 1995, but learning from Dr.B´s work and life has helped me throughout these years to grow into this lineage even in seminary. I honor her for her life and work. I grieve with those who love her. I remain committed to the lessons that she left behind.

Dr. B and I have been friends for several decades. I met her at Memphis Theological Seminary when she was Dean. I edited a volume, where she and her sister Susan co-wrote an article, and we've remained friends through her tenure at United Theological and after she became emerita. We visited via Zoom in early 2024. For her life and legacy, I give thanks.

Dr. B was at once fierce and gentle, and her spirit impacted my life. Race and the Cosmos fills me with "ahas!" in recent days, weeks, months of slow reading, speaking to my soul, spirit, mind and making sense of my decades-long interest in quantum physics and astronomy as it relates to prayer, healing, and contemplation. Excerpts of her inspired teachings full of art, movement, and wisdom in the CAC daily meditations nourish and delight. I´m so grateful.

I have been so sad since learning about Dr. Holmes' death. I loved her writing and will continue to cherish the books she authored. It was wonderful to hear her voice on the podcast, which had the joyous and resonant timbres I would have expected from encountering her on the page. She was very kind to me personally in my own endeavors as a writer, editor, and theologian. I'll be forever grateful for the small connection we had, and miss her bright, indelible voice. I remember the first time I listened to Dr. Holmes speak. I had just found the website of Fr. Rohr's meditations and she was listed as a teacher . There was a talk that she was giving on line, so I tuned in to see who she was and what she was saying. I can't tell you what the talk was about at this time, because my soul listens and keeps only the truths of what I hear or read. I remember being so impressed by her wisdom and the uniqueness of her thoughts and style . I remember thinking..." This is a strong spiritual woman". I feel blessed to have shared such a small part of her life wisdom and grateful for the blessing it brought to my life. I pray in love and thanksgiving to her and for all of you . Joanne Sullivan

Dr Barbara A Holmes was (and will always be) one of the most brilliant, creative, ethical, funny, generous, accomplished, and kind people I know. We met more than 20 years ago at the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples, while she was there doing research on Howard Thurman for her classic text _Joy Unspeakable_, and again in 2002 when she was keynoting a symposium at the Sophia Center in Oakland centered on her book _Race and the Cosmos_. She wrote in my copy: "The Cosmos intended for us to meet. Sisters should know one another. I am blessed by your friendship." It was I who have been blessed all these years.

She encouraged me as I completed by PhD, and basically dragged me into the community of religious scholars, introducing me to colleagues who have since become friends, and giving me my first visiting professorship while the ink was still wet on my degree. We have laughed, cried, celebrated, commiserated, encouraged, and prayed together through the joys and hardships.

She meaningfully touched so many many lives, and it is no exaggeration to say her imprint will live on through generations. I send so much love to her cherished husband (who made her happier than I have ever known her to be), her family, friends, colleagues, students, and beyond. Truly a life well lived. Thank you, my precious sister, may the Unbounded Cosmic Divine bless you as you take your place among the stars.
