Dr. Cecil E. Kinley Jr. 'Ed'

I just happened across Dr. Kinley's obituary today. I was an elective student with him in medical school at Dalhousie back in the late 1990s. He was a patient and inspiring teacher and his contributions will surely be missed. My sincere condolences to his family.

He will be forever remembered for all of his accomplishments, for his love for his family and his good heart towards others. Our family was very much saddened to hear of the passing away of this fine gentleman, community leader and friend. He will forever be remembered as a man who accomplished so much in the service of his fellow man. As his obituary shows his immense talents were used to make advances in all the many fields of life that he was passionate about. Somehow despite his enormous work load, he was able to devote his valuable time to his family and by serving as Provincial M.L.A. and President of so many important and varied organizations. Ed always displayed humbleness, humour and a perpetual warm smile even when the going was rough. The beautiful collection of family photos are a testament to a family man deeply loved, whose life will always be cherished. R.I.P.

I was very sorry to read that Dr. Kinley passed away. I worked in the VG OR as a Diagnostic Imaging Technologist and was always happy to be involved with his pacemaker cases. He was a true gentleman and a joy to work with.

Jacquie and Eddy and family, I am very sad to hear of your dad's death. I would often cross paths with Dr Ed on his morning walk to work. He aways had a good pace on but was never too rushed to stop to say hello. He reminds me of my late father Tony; always busy but always making time for a personal touch. He was revered in many of my physio comrades at the HI. I am not surprised to learn that he was the instigator of many successful health programs into the senior years of his career.
He certainly was a special and charming man. You have beautiful family photos, and evidence of a lot of support at this low time. I grieve for your loss. We can never replace a super-dad. Very sorry to hear of Ed's passing. We worked together for many years. I have fond memories of discussions with him about everything from which arteries to graft to the state of the Liberal party provincially and nationally. I will remember him as an insightful observer who always presented his views the now "old fashioned good manners. I will miss those discussions very much.

Your dad gave my family a mother with a new life and who, without his expertise and his team, would not have lived to see her grandchildren. I will never forget his kindness to our family. I was also fortunate to be a registered nurse working at VGH in the 70's on the cardiovascular floor and being the recipient of his knowledge. I was very saddened to hear of Dr Kinley's death. I worked with him as a staff nurse and nursing supervisor in the cardiovascular operating rooms during the 1980s. He was such a kind and gentle man, but always had a twinkle in his eye. He was the surgeon that we always started our new scrub nurses with because he was so calm, cool and collected and never once lost his temper. In ones professional life, you may have been fortunate enough to gain both direction and guidance into your chosen professional career. This is true of my initial and ongoing association with Dr. Cecil Edwin Kinley. In those early days of my career and at a time when I needed direction, he was one who provided me gentle persuasion with his characteristic smile and his insistence that all would go well. I have been very fortunate over these last several years to have spent special times with Ed and Sara while visiting Halifax. Sara and family, know that he continues to provide me direction. I was a CVS Nurse in the mid 80's and after that worked in the CVS clinic with Dr. Kinley. He taught me a lot about CVS without any "airs" what so ever. You could easily see his in-depth knowledge and infectious desire to spread it to help everyone in need. It was a pleasure to assist him in this task. I loved his pleasant manner and will always remember that beautiful smile and laugh... it made the workplace so uplifting. He was truely a wonderful person who helped a lot of people. I loved all the beautiful pictures which you posted... how nice to see that beautiful smile in all of them. I noted from the pictures, as his life progressed, the look on his face seemed more accomplished and full-filled, not only from a successful profession, but from a wonderful lifetime spent with his family.
Please accept my condolences for you loss. The world is a better place because of all he did for us. He will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Kinley and family,

You do not know us. But our father, Michael Pearl Snow was one of the first coronary bypass surgeries Dr. Kinley did in 1966, (I was 6 years old at the time.) Dad lived another 35 years after this life-saving surgery (LITERALLY), and died in 2001, after getting to know all of his grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren at the ripe old age of 83. Without Dr. Kinley's skill, my father would have died in his early 50's and none of us would have gotten to know our dad.
Thank you for the gift of our dad - provided by the skill and expertise of your husband, father, brother, & brilliant surgeon.
God bless him in his rest, and bless you as well. It does not make the pain go away, but I hope knowing how Dr. Kinley touched lives will help ease it from time to time.

How many years has ,it been since i worked as an OR nurse with Dr Kinley?
He often spoke of his wife Sara and bragged that years after the birth of her children she still wore size 7
Another memory was a Christmas party at your home, he gave a few of us a tour, laughing when he found his 2 boys sleeping in the same room, he said they had separate bedrooms but always ended up together
I was saddened to see that Andrew predeceased him. I am sorry for that
I have been living in the Valley for 40 years so wasn't aware.

I had the privilege of discussing the merits of health promotion with Dr. Kinley on many occasions. As someone who delivered acute care with innovation, he was steadfast in his views about preventing CV disease in the first place. His leadership in this area, as well as sport, will leave a long legacy. My sincere condolences to the Kinley family.

Dr.Kinley's family: my thoughts & prayers are with you all @ this time. I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with Dr. Kinley from 1990- his retirement. His contributions to the province and to the medical community were enormous but even more to the residents, medical students and nurses he taught, all who feel that he was the model we strived to emulate. My sincere sympathies on Ed's passing. My experience with him as a teacher and mentor began during the summer of 1978 when I rotated as a resident on the CV service. His collegiality and obvious passion for his profession have remained evident ever since and have guided me as I progressed through my career. I worked at RGH CVICU between 1979-1985. I was a praire girl who found herself in a completely forgein land. Dr. Kinley's kindness always went a long way to make me feel more at home. I was so amazed how the Medical and Nursing staff not only worked so well together but socialized so well together too. I remember the Kinley's generosity of having several summer parties and experiencing the pure joy of going out on Dr. Kinley's boat. It was the first time I ever experienced sailing. I am sorry to hear the news of Dr. Kinley's passing. He was a gentleman and a wonderful doctor. I was a young nurse in the CVICU at the Victoria General in the early 80's. Dr. Kinley was always pleasant and very approachable. He had a great way of teaching as he went from bedside to bedside. I learned so much about caring for a patient following cardiac surgery. As a nurse, I felt respected and valued. I was honoured when he quickly offered to write a letter of recommendation when he discovered I was leaving the CVICU.

Like so many, I was pleased to have known him. I hope you find comfort in your own memories and the memories of others.
