Dr. Cynthia Balzer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 6, 2024.
Dr. Cynthia Balzer passed on Friday, November 1, 2024, in Philadelphia, PA. Cindy was born May 1, 1955, in Far Rockaway, NY to Joel and Roberta (Fields) Balzer. She grew up in Huntington, Long Island and attended Michigan State where she met her future wife, Deirdre. After undergrad she lived in Italy for nine years, which she considered her "platinum period." She graduated from veterinary school at the University of Pisa and moved to Philadelphia in 1986 where she opened the Gerard Veterinary Clinic and practiced until 2017. She continued to work in spay and neuter clinics until 2021.

Cindy dedicated both her professional and personal life to orphaned animals. She housed and treated dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, guinea pigs, possums, rats, and birds at her Roxborough home. The chickens and pigs were especially beloved by local children who stopped by frequently to say hello. The chickens' eggs were shared widely among the community. In addition to her passion for animals Cindy played softball for over 50 years and sponsored The Animals softball team in the Fairmount Park Women's Softball League, where she and Deirdre met many of their closest friends. She was also active in Congregation Beth Ahavath

Cindy was known for her sense of humor, storytelling, brightly colored clothing and hats, and love of road trips, afghan blankets and parades.

She is survived by her wife Deirdre Agan; Siblings Jeffery and Wendy Balzer, Suzanne and Howard Greenberg; Aunts and Uncles Douglas and Caroline Fields, Bruce Fields, Kenny Fields; Nieces and nephews Morgan and Rubin Rodriguez, Tyler and Elena Balzer, Zachary Greenberg, Evan Greenberg, Deirdre Brill and Calvin Atwood; In-laws Mary and Larry Brill, Claudia and Ray Burgdoff; And beloved Florida, Long Island and California cousins.

There will be a celebration of Cindy's life on May 1, 2025. In lieu of flowers donations can be given in Cindy's name to the Montgomery County or Philadelphia SPCA.

Funny how life works, I was running down some of my old veterinary classmates and was very saddened to learn that our dear Cindy had recently passed. What a wonderful human being she was. I will always cherish the memories we shared as classmates during our formative veterinary educational years in Pisa. You will be sorely missed! David A. Gordon, DVM

Sending my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr Balzer. Found out the news today and was devastated. Had the absolute pleasure of working with her at The Spayed Club Veterinary Clinic, and we are all thinking of you during this difficult time. Dr Cindy was truly one of a kind. Never hesitant to help any animal in a time of need, no matter the time of day, she never turned anyone away. She was a kind, compassionate, selfless soul and she will never be forgotten. I´m so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn so much under her wings and just to know her. Rest peacefully Doctor B

Many years ago when Cindy was a member of Congregation Beth Ahavah, she hosted the Women's Chavurah at her home. At the time she had a "pet" that no one expected... Chester, a potbelly pig. We were all sitting in the living room eating dinner. Dessert was laid out on the kitchen table. All of a sudden, Chester ran through the living room from the kitchen with a box of Entemann's Danish pastries in his mouth and dove under the covers on his bed to enjoy his dessert. Cindy was a true lover of all animals. She will be missed.

I once had a difficult Beth Ahavah officer ask me why Cindy's income as a vet was so low. I explained to them, smiling at thinking about Cindy, that she practiced veterinary medicine as social justice medicine, not to become rich. Like the time she set the broken leg of a hamster. It was all this family had, the family loved the hamster and had been distraught when they came to the office. Cindy smiled and said, what was I going to charge them, $2? She took care of the hamster with the same compassion she treated all of her patients. A very special person.

Dr. Cindy was a wonderful veterinarian and eventually, a wonderful friend as well. She was direct, kind and compassionate. She treated many of my dogs and cats and she was just an amazing surgeon and an amazing person. I´m so sad to read this news. Love to Deirdre and to her family.

She changed my life! Dr. Cindy was always bringing in strays, including me. I admired her strength as a woman and the love she gave freely to people and animals. I didn't have many people in my life who I looked up to, but Dr. Cindy was that person for me. I started working at the vet clinic at 15 years old because she gave me that chance after school. I learned so much from observing her. She also was the reason I was able to continue college and get my AA. She has no idea the impact she had in my life. I became an RN because I had an amazing person like Dr. Cindy believed in me. We did lose contact for many years, but I will never forget her. My greatest condolences to her partner, Deirdre.

This was at our 40th high school reunion. Cindy was a special person, bright and a good friend back in H.S. The picture was taken in Oct. 2013. My condolences to you all. (I already wrote something in a previous entry; so this is my second post). Sending hugs.

I am a previous client of Dr. Cindy and Girard Veterinary. I adopted a very high need rescue dog back in 1997 and he was a regular patient of hers. Both she and Albert were AWESOME in the care they provided. I am sad to hear of her passing. She was a true heroine for all kinds of animals.

Dr Cindy is definitely one of a kind! She knew how to talk to clients and made everyone feel comfortable. She was a comedian and always made everyone smile! I am happy she gave me the opportunity to work and travel to help animals in the Hopi Reservation in Arizona, what an experience!

I went to High School with Cindy. My recollection is that she was a trusted friend, and listener. Also a non-conformist. Cindy was bright. I attended my 40th high school reunion (in 2013), and I am fairly sure she attended as well. She will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to Dari, family and friends.
