Dr. Frank Rink Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2025.
Francis "Frank" James Rink of Shorewood, Illinois passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025 while on vacation in Florida, surrounded by his wife and dear friends. Born on December 29, 1949, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Joliet, IL, he was the eldest of seven children born to Frank and Gladys Rink.

Frank began his life on his grandparents' farm in Manteno, IL, where his father farmed the land, before the family moved to Braidwood, where he spent most of his childhood. His early years on the farm sparked a lifelong love of animals, especially cattle. An active member of the 4H Club, he took great pride in raising and showing cattle, winning several cattle and soil judging contests. Whether working on the farm or looking after his younger brothers and sisters, Frank's strong sense of responsibility and dedication to family took root at a young age.

Frank's passion for education and lifelong learning also developed early. A bright and hardworking student, he attended St. Rose Elementary School in Wilmington before moving on to Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, where he graduated in 1968. His passion for learning continued at Illinois State University, where he earned a degree in English in 1972. While serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, he taught English and coached basketball, track, and baseball at Buckley-Loda Junior and Senior High Schools. He later returned to Illinois State University to further his education, earning a Master of Science in Reading Education, a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education Administration, and, in 1990, a PhD in Education Administration from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Frank served the majority of his career as principal and superintendent at Metamora Grade School from 1984 to 2001, later becoming the superintendent at Burr Ridge School District 180 until his retirement in 2007. His dedication to his students, staff, and community left a lasting impact on countless lives.

In addition to his professional achievements, Frank was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He married Kathleen "Kathy" Ann Grant on November 19, 1977. Frank adored Kathy and together they built a life rich in shared adventures, deep friendship, and a love that only grew stronger with time. They cherished time spent together with friends, enjoying dinners, bowling, pickleball, wine tastings, and traveling the world.

Frank was a proud and loving father to his son, Justin Rink, born in 1979, and his daughter, Heather (Chad) Hanley, born in 1982. But nothing brought him more joy than his beloved granddaughter, Eleanor, born in 2017. Frank's love for her was profound, and he found endless joy in her presence.

Beyond his family and career, Frank had many passions. He was a dedicated runner in his younger years. A lifelong White Sox fan, one of his most cherished memories was attending the 2005 World Series with his brothers. He was also a skilled carp fisherman, an avid birdwatcher, and a talented photographer, always finding joy in capturing nature's beauty and life's special moments through his lens.

Frank was a member of St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet, where a funeral mass will be held in his honor on March 14, 2025 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to American Heart Association, the National Audubon Society or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Frank Rink lived a life of purpose, love, and dedication-to his family, his students, and the many people fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed.

It is such sad news when I read about the passing of my 2 North Walker Hall floor mate at Illinois State. Frank not only was an exceptional student, he was a blast to hang around with. He was one of the good guys being a White Sox fan. In fact we drove overnight from Normal to Kansas City to watch the Sox play in their 1972 season opener against the Royals.
My prayers are with you, his family, during this difficult time.

Reading through these messages it is very apparent that Mr. Rink touched many many lives. And it's no different for me. As a student at BL, I am many fond memories and so many ways he impacted me throughout my life. I remember riding with him to go get a new pole vault for the track team. He somewhat tied it to the side of his car and I had to hold on to it outside the window for the hour trip back to school. He was passionate about so many things, and will be missed, but always remembered.

Frank accomplished much with his life. He was devoted to his faith, family and friends. He was a teacher in his 70´s but he probably didn´t realize it. Frank inspired me to learn something new in my retirement. I watched, listened and learned. I saw the joy the birds gave him and looked at his photos. I have learned to identify birds by their calls and songs. I am learning to use a digital camera to capture the beautiful birds and when I do I will always think of you.

"altissima quaeque flumina minimo sono labi" is a Latin idiom, meaning "the deepest rivers flow with the least sound". This ancient saying personified my brother-in-law.

Frank was intelligent and hard working never boasting or bragging. He used his intelligence and creativity to enrich our society through teaching.

He was consistently available to all who knew him. Frank was a steady, reliable, and substantial. Thoughtfulness and kindness was present during the most difficult times. It seems impossible that Frank is not here now helping us navigate this arduous moment of his passing.

Frank was a good husband to my sister, Kathy, and completely devoted to his children, Justin and Heather.

I did not recognize his many attributes when I first met him many years ago. I´ve learned along the way what a treasured person he was and like many, will miss him dearly.

I first met Dr. Rink when I was in 6th grade with his daughter Heather. His presence commanded immediate respect, but out of professionalism. He was always in a suit and he always spoke to us like we were mature and smart, independent thinkers. Not everyone treats an 11 year old that way.

30+ years later I'm lucky to still consider Heather a best friend and I've always admired the life Frank and Kathy built for themselves. His loss stings but his legacy lives on. Sending lots of love to all those who love him.

Mr. Frank Rink was an outstanding English teacher. He always found ways to keep you involved and interested in his class. A wonderful man. While I myself never met any of his family, I know what they are going through from my own family losing family members. While it takes a while, there are always grat and very fond memories of that grat man that you will always cherish. I will say, Dr. Rink you will be missed by all, you were a great man. We are so sorry to hear this. He was such a great teacher, coach, and person! He was our speaker at B-L class of `75 graduation (Janet´s class graduation). Every class member I´m sure remembers his entrance to the gym as he pole vaulted to the stage to start his speech.
After high school we grew to be good friends. Kathy, I loved our friendship and our play times with our kids. I remember fishing at the lake and Frank was all about it.
Years later our paths crossed at sporting events and he was always excited to see us and catch up.
Our love and prayers to Kathy, Justin, Heather and family. He was an amazing person who touched so many lives, including ours.

I am so sad to hear this. Mr. Rink was a favorite teacher of mine at Buckley High School. We were all pretty scared of him since he was an ex Marine but as time went on we realized he was a softy at heart.
When I moved to Metamora, I saw him as a lector at church and couldn't believe my eyes. One day I went to the grade school and ask to speak with him. When I went in his office, he knew who I was after 20+ years.
He will always hold a special place in my heart. My sympathies to his family!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm another member of the Flickr community who came to know and love his photography work. I never knew exactly where he was from, but being another Chicagoan, I always loved seeing his wonderful photos of our city! Such a testament to his talent from the messages that have been left here. His wonderful work will be missed for sure. His family and friends are in our thoughts.

My condolences to Franks family and friends. Frank was a Flickr friend and I admired his diligence in all the tasks he took on in various groups and his never failing sense of fair play. He was a wonderful photographer and I adored his photos of flying geese and his loving photos of his granddaughter. Rest in peace, Frank.

Frank was an enthusiastic photographer and shared his many interests through the lens of his camera. He diligently uploaded one photo a week to the 'One A Week' Flickr group, never missing a single week for the last six years. I feel I have come to know him well while admiring his photographic skills and enjoying his warm personality.

His final photo was taken and uploaded on 16th February and was one of his beloved grandaughter. He commented.......
"They grow up in a blink of an eye! Our seven-year-old granddaughter has been taking horseback riding lessons at an equestrian center near her home. Her instructor always comments favorably about her balance and athleticism. We had the opportunity to watch her at her session on February 16, 2025. Have a great week!" A very poignant last photo from Frank.

We will miss you Frank, it's been a pleasure to have known you.

I was fortunate to grow up in the day with cousins Hank and Jim. We spent hours and hours at our grandmothers house on the farm. We played baseball, raised cattle, participated in 4 H. Was such a great time! If not on the farm we spent countless time in Braidwood. Much of the time was playing baseball with all the neighborhood boys. Uncle Frank would come home from work and jump right in the game with us. Hank was a mentor and someone I always looked up to. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kathy, Justin, Heather and the entire Rink family. RIP Dr. Hank.

Spent many an enjoyable morning and afternoon on the bank next to Frank in the tournaments he so generously organized. A master angler and fierce competitor, Frank cared deeply for the sport of carp fishing and was known and respected by everyone in the community. He cared deeply about sportsmanship and fair play. Each time you competed with Frank he was there to win but that never stopped him from lending a competitor a hand or a word of advice or encouragement. An absolute gentleman in every way. Our angling community owes him an incredible debt for his tireless promotion and dedication to the sport. I will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to the Rink family.
