Dr. Jess Lester Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2015.
Dr. Jess C. Lester passed away on Monday the 11th of May 2015 from complications following lung surgery. He was born in Springfield, Illinois on September 12, 1931 and grew up outside of St. Louis, in Granite City, IL. He graduated from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in 1957, and his internship and residency brought him to Atlanta where he began a career that spanned more than fifty years. He was a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology, the American Board of Eye Surgery and many other societies. For many years he practiced on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, later moving Lester Eye Centre to Northside Hospital. He served as a clinical volunteer associate professor at Emory University School of Medicine, teaching residents and staff members intraocular surgery and was considered a pioneer in modern cataract surgery. Dr. Jess performed the first intraocular lens implantation in the state of Georgia and went on to develop many ophthalmic instruments and intraocular lenses. His awards and achievements were many. One of his most cherished honors was received in 1996 when he was selected by his fellow doctors as the doctor they would pick when they needed a physician, as published in Atlanta Magazine. He had the honor of operating on many physicians and their families. He retired from practicing Ophthalmology in 2006 and continued to teach for several more years.

Jess was a member of First Baptist Church Woodstock. He was a devout Christian and his deep faith was evident in all he did, both for his community and in caring for his patients.

An avid outdoorsman, Jess enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, flying helicopters and snowmobiling in Montana. He was also extremely knowledgeable on a vast array of subjects. Jess studied every day, immersing himself in the daily quest to learn something new, and never failing to end each day in prayer. He was born with the heart of a servant and passionately pursued the gift he believed he had been given, which was to serve others; including his church, his practice of medicine and his marriage to Debra. While he enjoyed each of these pursuits, the focus of his life and the greatest joy was the time spent with his beloved grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Debra, his daughter, Debbie and Dan Lafferty and her mother Mrs. Mary Jim Luce, son and daughter- in-law,Jason and Kacie Easterling; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Carl Lester and Catharine Lester; sister and brother-in-law, Linda McIlvoy and Col. Michael McIlvoy. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Bender Sletten.

Services for Dr. Jess C. Lester will be held in the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Woodstock Saturday, May 16th at 11:30 in the morning. Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel 173 Allen Road, Sandy Springs. There will also be visitation at the church Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:15. Entombment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Highway, NW, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 at 2:30.

The family requests that no flowers be sent but rather a donation be made in his memory and to the glory of God. Donations may be made to Eagle Ranch in Chestnut Mountain, Georgia, Hopequest Ministries in Woodstock, Georgia or to Word of Life Panama at https://give.wol.org/location/panama.

Jess
You were a refreshing breath of reason and intelligence in the morass of stilted, unyielding regimentation of training in surgery. Loved you like a big brother then, love you now. Very saddened. Sincere condolence and love to Debra, and children.

I just saw where Dr. Lester had passed away last May. I started seeing him when I was 4 or 5 years old. I went to see him every year because of my eye disease. He performed two surgeries on my eye. I always looked forward to seeing him each year. I had such a huge crush on him. I remember going to see him in Atlanta and my mom and I would always go see the coy in the pond where his building was located.
So sorry for your loss,

Debra, heartfelt sympathy from our family to yours and Jess's family in his passing away and with regrets news was delayed reaching me. My late husband, Art, had so many wonderful memories of their hunting times together, and several in our family too were blessed to have known him professionally. May you find comfort in the days ahead in the knowledge of one so compassionate and gifted while with us. Blessings and our love, Mrs. Art (Charlotte) Parsons and Family

I was saddened to hear that Jess passed. He was a fine, compassionate, skillful physician, who always put the interest of his patients foremost. He was also a wonderful teacher and mentor to many younger ophthalmologists. I will always be grateful for his friendship and collegiality.

Debra,
I saw the notice in the paper and wanted to express my condolences. You may not remember me but Dr. Lester was my mother, Sarah Owen's, doctor for years and he was mine too before he started seeing only surgical patients. She always said she was his first patient when he started in Atlanta and she saw him until she died. I was a patient of Dr. Rowe's for years and got to know you when you worked for him and always looked forward to seeing you when I brought mother to her appt with Dr. Lester. Again, my heartfelt condolences.

Deb
Words are a loss. You guys were family to us as we were to you and Jess. Trust he is in heaven with my Dad and Barry Thrasher and the rest asking if they had eye problems when they walk through those pearly gates. I still remember back in 1976 landing in our front yard in the helicopter to pick my Dad up and head to metro eye and ear. Over 40 years of deep friendship. You are strong and will survive. We know you guys better than most.

Jess Lester, one of the finest ophthalmologists and men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing passed away on Monday. Jess, I called him Dr. Lester out of respect and admiration until he insisted that call him Jess, worked tirelessly to benefit mankind by improving cataract surgery outcomes. When I started my practice he taught me how to do yag laser procedures and helped me with difficult patients. Foremost in Jess' life was love for his Lord, his family, especially his wonderful wife Deb Lester, his country, and his profession. He is my example in doing things heartily as unto the Lord. I am sure that he heard "Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master." I had great love and respect for one of my finest mentors. I pray the peace that passes all understanding for family and loved ones.

Doctor Lester looked after my eyes from the time I was born in 1962 until he retired. I would not have had the good vision I have had if not for him. He has, and will be missed.

I was saddened to hear of Jesse's passing this week. I will always remember him and the incredible kindness and teaching during my year long fellowship with him in 1982. His surgical skills and enthusiasm for Ophthalmology were nearly matched by his many hobbies and sports. I will always remember seeing that helicopter come down on the top parking deck of GA Baptist Hospital!

My thoughts are there with your entire family.
