Evelyn-

I was so saddened to learn of the passing of Joel. We were friends at Mumford High in Detroit, at U of M, and roommates in our senior year in medical school.

Joel was the smartest guy I knew. However, he never talked about his superior grades or academic standing. In his quiet and unassuming way, he was always readily willing to help out the rest of us if he could. We knew that he would go on to accomplish great things in medicine.

Gail and I are very grateful that we had a chance to reconnect with Joel and with you at the 50th Reunion in Ann Arbor. We are so sorry for your loss.

I was sad to hear of Dr. Bennett’s passing. He told me he had pancreatic cancer last year, but i was always hoping against hope, before i would even consider making an appointment with anyone but him. Dr. Bennett was my doctor since he diagnosed me with hairy cell leukemia in 1998. It was a pleasure to have an annual appointment with him as it was always more of a get together than an appointment.
I owe him alot and will miss him.

Joel was a mentor for me. In fact, I chose to study hematology in part because of Joel. I was a senior medical student at Penn, on my last elective rotation, Joel inspired me to be the academician I am today. Joel was understated, had a wry sense of humor, was brilliant, and remained a colleague. Joel taught me how to be a critical thinker, how to be tolerant of ambiguity, and taught me the meaning of wisdom. ASH meetings will not be the same without Joel. May he rest in Peace.

Joel was an amazing mentor, who was always available to listen to your crazy platelet biology ideas. He was one of his kind. Never heard him say "No" whenever needed, even if it was a last minute favor. He always gave his honest opinion on research which helped many of his students in advancing their career in right direction. May his soul rest in peace.
