Dr. Paul Wesley Schaper, 88, of Chesterfield, MO passed away on January 23, 2023 at his residence. He was born October 3, 1934 in Lincoln County (Troy) Missouri, son of Lawrence and Esther (nee Knipmeyer) Schaper.
He was educated in Elsberry, MO and went to college at Central Methodist, Fayette, MO and Greenville College, Greenville, IL. On September 1, 1956 he was married to Evangeline Porterfield. Paul received an MD from the University of Missouri in 1959 and completed a residency in General Surgery at Saint Louis County Hospital in Clayton, MO. He became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and certified by the American Board of Surgeons. In 1964 he moved to the town of Benton in Marshall County, KY where he practiced general surgery at the local hospital for over 40 years until retiring at age 70.
Paul lived a life of love and service in both his community and abroad. As a devoted family man, he took great joy in spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was active in Benton Church of the Nazarene, the Gideons, youth sports coaching, and various committees. Upon retirement he was appointed to the hospital board and was instrumental in the selection of the location and construction of the current Marshall County Hospital. Paul took up golf late in life and became a regular at the Benton Country Club where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends. He enjoyed golf on holidays and annual Hilton Head vacations with his son, sons-in-law and grandsons.
In 1975 Paul and Evangeline began mission trips to Haiti, Swaziland, Kenya, and Zambia where he allowed surgeons at mission hospitals to take furloughs. These trips proved to be some of the most joyful, challenging and rewarding in his experience as a surgeon.
In 2017 Paul and Evangeline moved from their home in Kentucky to Friendship Village Chesterfield, MO (FVC) to be closer to their daughter Diane and family. He quickly became involved in the many activities at FVC where he loved the friendly banter and intellectual stimulation of his many new friends. Paul rarely missed Trivia night, where his exceptional memory was an asset. He joined the Creative Writing group where he was inspired to write his memoir, “Stories From My Journey” which was published in January 2023.
Paul is survived by his wife Evangeline, his sister Althea in Independence, KS, son Dr. Lawrence (Larry) and his wife Kim in Louisville, KY, daughter Diane and her husband Ned Mozier in St. Charles, MO, and daughter Julie and her husband Phil Shomo who live in Hilton Head, SC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Caitlin (nee Mozier) Yang, Jessica (nee Schaper) Finney, Luke Shomo, Hannah (nee Mozier) Grooms, Alex Schaper, Dylan Mozier, Caleb Shomo, and Austin Schaper, and 7 great grandchildren.
Services: A Memorial Service will be held at Friendship Village Chesterfield, 15201 Olive Blvd., Chesterfield, MO 63017 Saturday January 28th at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chaplain’s Fund c/o Friendship Village Chesterfield, 15201 Olive Blvd. Chesterfield MO 63017, Gideon’s Marshall County, P.O. Box 206, Benton, Ky 42025, or Salvation Army, 1130 Hampton Ave #3147, St. Louis, MO 63139. As a service of the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, friends may sign the family’s on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.

I met Dr. Paul June 23rd 2012, the first year he rented my beach house in Hilton Head. We visited that year, and I knew then that Dr. Paul was a very special man with a very special spirit. We would talk about the importance of family and making memories. I remember him telling me about his and Evangaline's move from the house to the retirement community and how easy it made his life.
I looked forward to his return every year and the visits we would have during the week. We would sit on the screened in porch looking out over the ocean and watch the kids play on the beach. He was very content as he should have been with a life well lived.
I will miss my visits with Dr. Paul and extend my deepest condolences to his family.

I am so saddened to hear the news of Paul’s passing. I will never forget the kindness, love, and acceptance of all of you when I moved to Benton in 1972 as your new minister. There are too many good memories to recount. My growth as a minister and human being can be attributed in no small part to having your all in my life. I am so glad I was able to visit with you just before you moved.
I have come to realize that life isn’t measured by just beliefs, but by actions that lead us to engage in our wonderful world. Paul was engaged in life and that is more than can be said of many others. You all are in my heart and I wish nothing but strength, insight, and love for all of you.
Grace & Peace,
Bro. Rick

When I worked at the Benton Hospital as Medical Transcriptionist, Dr Schapker was one of my favorites. I enjoyed transcribing his surgery histories and working with him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and incredible humor and humility. He was truly a good man. May he rest in peace.

To the entire Schaper Family,
Please accept our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy from FVC’s Saturday morning Continuing Education class on Dr. Paul Schaper’s recent passing.
Unequivocally, his presence will be greatly MISSED and ALWAYS remembered. Dr. Paul’s specialty was explaining medical issues in layman’s terms we could understand. He was “in his element” simplifying and describing complex, technical medical procedures relevant to any topic. His delivery was most impressive; it was delivered in a down-to-earth, unassuming manner. We all knew what he was talking about; it was amazing how he connected with us. Dr. Paul truly was a master explaining/clarifying ANY medical condition. We all admired his photographic memory and were in awe with his vast knowledge. Also, we’re so fortunate Dr. Paul had a real affinity for history and strongly believed in the old adage “you never stop learning.” I can still hear his wife Vangie comment, “My husband loves history; my response was “lucky us.” Dr. Paul’s passing is a void that can’t be filled. His demeanor was kindhearted and compassionate – he was “all heart.”
FVC is praying for the Schaper family during this difficult and challenging time. God Bless You All. We wish you peace.
Finally, a special thanks to Vangie and her daughters for sharing Dr. Paul’s condition with me Saturday after our January 21, 2023 session. I’ll treasure that conversation forever.

Dr. Schaper along with all of his other wonderful qualities, had a sense of humor. I was blessed to have him do surgery on me and when he realized that he lived out passed us, made the remark..."I've often thought if I had to come down your driveway with snow on it I would end up in your storage building." His kindness and sense of humor greeted me on rounds and my recovery was swift. He was a man of God and it showed in his daily life. Prayers for his wife and family. God bless all of you as He fills your hearts with hope and your minds with joyful memories.

Paul served under me in 1959-60 as an intern. We were good friends and a great surgeon. He consulted with me about orthopedic cases often and never hesitated to refer difficult cases. He was one of the very last 'truly inclusive' general surgeons (everything but eye) trained in US. I am certain the city of Benton, Kentucky misses him and so do I. My sincerest condolences to Evangeline and family.

Prayers are being sent to Dr. Schaefer´s family. He was a great doctor!! As a child he removed my tonsils. When I married and our family was complete we reached out to him to do my husband´s vasectomy. I will never forget him allowing me to stay in the room and watch. My husband passed out after receiving the shot to numb him. I was a bit nervous about worried. Dr. Schaefer said to me " go get a wet wash cloth and wipe he forehead, he will come back to us", and he did. I´ve told that story many times over the years. We were blessed to have him as a doctor in Marshall Co.
Sending our condolences to his family

Remembering a passage of scripture Doc often quoted while I was in college, “ “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” - 2 Peter 1:10-11 NKJV
What an abundant entrance into heaven he has no doubt now made.
Grace and Peace to all the family.
