Dr. Robert E. Cone

Bob is greatly missed, even more so as time goes by.

My heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow. My deepest condolences to Jen and her family.

Bob and I became friends and colleagues when he arrived at UConn Health. It did not take me very long to appreciate Bob's intelligence and his scientific curiosity. These 2 qualities allowed Bob to add significantly to scientific knowledge. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Bob's scientific work was that it was often way ahead of its time. In at least two major areas of his scientific endeavors - the sympathetic nervous system and immune regulation and immune cellular anergy and cyclic AMP - his work became even more impressive retrospectively as the rest of the scientific world caught up to his findings. Bob was a pleasure to collaborate with and I was pleased to be a co-author on a number of Bob's published papers.

Bob was a person with a very generous spirit and I will greatly miss his friendship, humor and collegiality.

People ask: "Why do Jews always answer a question with a question?" Bob had the answer. When I would ask him in an e-mail, "How are you?", he'd invariably respond, "How should I be?" Bob was the definition of the word "mensch," and I was fortunate to have him as friend and colleague.

This is such a loss. Bob and my late husband Hal were roommates in graduate school at Florida State. Through the years on our occasional reunions, the two of them loved to recount their time together and laugh at their escapades all over again. One reunion was in Ann Arbor on the night of the first moon landing in 1969. We last were together with Bob and Mickey in NYC a few years ago, enjoying brunch and wandering around Greenwich Village. My condolences to Mickey, Jennifer, Laura, and the extended family on the loss of this good man.

My favorite memory was playing "hit the penny" on E. 26st when cousin Robbie was babysitting me. May your memory be a blessing and the knowledge and love left behind change the world.

Bob was a vast source of immunological knowledge and always had a great story. And yes, his jokes! I very much enjoyed our work together and our meetings, also after he retired and occasionally came back for symposia or just for a visit. I miss him. May his memory be for a blessing.

A favorite quote from Dr. Cone: "I guess that's the difference between research and re-search." This was often stated in a journal club when the results under discussion looked eerily familiar to something Dr. Cone or anyone else had discovered years prior. My deepest condolences.

it is with great sadness that I read of Bob's passing today. Bob was such a great colleague by not only through his powerful intellect but with a sense of humor that was unmatched (his jokes were legendary). Bob made the department of immunology a lot of fun to work in and profoundly expanded its scientific reach. RIP Bob; Tony Vella

I was honored to meet Dr. Cone and his wife at Laura's wedding this past July. I had never met them before, but I was comfortable with them immediately. He was a gentle soul, and I am very saddened by this loss. My son Tyler (who was also fortunate enough to meet him), daughter Taylor, and myself send all our love to Laura and her family.

Donnie & Joni Lamm have many fond memories of Robbie & Mickey visiting us in Florida with Sylvia, Jeff & Donna. It was always a good laugh. Jeff and I visited Ruth & Joe in Brooklyn very often because our dad Jack Lamm thought of Joe as a brother. Ruth always made Robbie drink a glass of warm milk with a raw egg. He always tried to dump it in the sink. We will miss him with a full heart. Love to all

I helped my father and Robert put a swing set together for Jen and Laura. I´ve known Robert for all but 9 years of my life.

He was my Ph.D Mentor ... and will always remain an inspiration. I will always remember his integrity, humility, scientific mind and most importantly .. his love and passion to train his students and postdocs. R.I.P Dr. Cone and THANK YOU for everything! You will always remain in my heart and I will always be proud to say that I learned immunology from a true pioneer!

Cousin Rob, I remember your becoming a bar mitzvah and your big party in Brooklyn. The Cones were in usual raucous joy over another Cone boy. May you be with Ruth, Joe, Bill, Mike, Ida and Sylvia entertaining each other. Thanks for your impact in healthcare and being a loving husband , dad and Zayde.
