Dr. Robert Hoehn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 10, 2025.
Dr. Robert S. Hoehn, a father, grandfather, brother, and respected oral surgeon, passed away on April 23, 2025, in Syracuse, New York. He was 86 years old.

Born in Rochester, New York, and a graduate of Penfield Central School (Class of 1956), Dr. Hoehn earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Illinois in 1961, where he was a lifetime member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

He joined the United States Army in 1961 as a medical specialist, continuing a lifelong commitment to care and discipline that defined both his professional and personal life.

Robert went on to attend dental school at the University of Buffalo, where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1967. He then served as a dental internist at Rochester General Hospital from 1967 to 1968. He later completed a residency in anesthesiology at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, from 1968 to 1969.

Dr. Hoehn was a longtime practitioner of oral surgery, known for his meticulous skill, steady hands, and deep care for his patients and colleagues. From 1970 to 1987, he ran a successful private dental practice in Rochester, New York. During this time, his work improved thousands of lives and left a legacy of compassion and professionalism. He also served as president of the Monroe County Dental Society from 1986 to 1987.

In addition to his medical career, Dr. Hoehn was a devoted student of history. He was an avid reader who loved sharing stories of the past-often bringing history to life through vivid storytelling and conversation. He also gave generously of his time to his community, volunteering at the Tibbets Point Lighthouse and the Cape Vincent Museum. His love for the St. Lawrence River began in his youth, when he worked on the American Boat Line in Clayton-starting as a deckhand and eventually becoming the tour narrator, sharing the region's rich history with visitors.

He is survived by his three children-Dr. Beck Hoehn, Jennifer Hoehn O'Neill, and Robert M. Hoehn-and four grandchildren: Finley O'Neill, May O'Neill, Robert O. Hoehn, and Irene R. Hoehn. He is survived by his sister, Candi Kittle, and his former wife, Jean M. Hoehn.

Dr. Hoehn was predeceased by his parents, Robert A. Hoehn and Esther S. Hoehn, and by his sister, Penny Hoehn, his beloved middle sibling. He was the oldest of the three.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dr. Robert S. Hoehn may be made to the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Historical Society, P.O. Box 683, Cape Vincent, NY 13618.

Doc was a very solid friend for my Dan. They planned fishing trips off Key West and Marathon, shared Ch dinners with our family and enjoyed Sharkey´s peel and eat fresh shrimp while listening to enjoyable island live music with us.
Doc gave all he could for many years, offering surgical and dental assistance to prisoners up and down the river, served as President of the NY Dental Assoc and even weeks before he went on to heaven gave a dental talk at the lovely retirement center where Rob placed him. Amazing that he could think of others when he was in so much pain. Amazing friend and contributor to St John´s in The Cape with brand new pew cushions, having found those solid oak pews at a church closing their doors and The Cape church in need after the church fire. He volunteered for the museum and Tibbett´s Point Lighthouse for many years, a faithful volunteer, even giving up coffee hour time to reach the visitor center at the lighthouse in plenty od time to warmly greet any visitor passing by!!! That was a sacrifice for sure since those coffee hours were pretty hearty with hot casseroles and sweet treats.
Dan and Doc spent many a cool spring and cool winter day on his river porch trying to solve the world´s problems, share village news and give comfort to each other about medical woes.
He will be missed by us and especially by Dan, Tommy, Marilyn, Peg and Wes from chruch and our cradle-to- grave Episcopalian certainly served well, good and faithful servant.
God Bless His Soul, Rob, Vermont daughter, grandkids who he treasured and lovely sister´s family

As a kid growing up on the River, the Fourth of July was a big Summer gathering for our extended family. Uncle Rob made it an even bigger event by organizing the fireworks, which made a big impression on us kids. To get the best booms and have a longer show, Rob pooled funds from the neighbors and drove to Canada to pick them up (much harder than today). Uncle Rob knew how to throw a party and this was quite a big one!
