I became a Christian my sophomore year. It was at Evangel Baptist Church that I met Roland. While teaching at Wheaton College he became the interim pastor at the church. He baptized me at 16 years old. I went on to Wheaton College and majored in Literature. I had Dr. Hein for Romantic and Modern poetry. I did a research paper on T.S Eliot's Burnt Norton. He gave me an A and wrote, "An excellent essay!" That meant the world to me. An absolutely wonderful man.

I was just remembering Professor Hein and the Wade Center - he taught me so much about good literature and The Inklings that someday I am thinking about writing an article about him and the joy he had in sharing his knowledge. What a delight it was to wake up on a Saturday morning and know that I was headed to the Wade Center for a fun morning of discussion and comaraderie with fellow Wadies:) May your home brim with his memories - miss him always because noone has been able to replace his insights and great discussions on great books.

Roland was interim pastor at Evangel Baptist Church in 1973 along with being a Wheaton professor. He baptized me at 16 years old. I attended Wheaton College and had him for Romantic and Modern English Literature. He loved the Lord.

I enjoyed the classes at Christ Church. I would never have read any of the books that we discussed if it wasn't for Dr. Hein's get togethers. I have many happy memories. I also enjoyed getting to know Dorothy.

I met Professor Hein at the Wade Center in Wheaton - for years I attended his Saturday morning lectures and discussions on George MacDonald and The Inklings - what a time of learning and joy as we delved into great writings and great discussions! I was a new believer who grew in quantum leaps in my faith as I learned so much on those mornings - and at his other book discussions as well on Wednesdays- would have enjoyed being in his classes forever! He will be truly missed and I am grateful for all he taught me!

My husband Phil Haugen (‘73) and I both remember Dr. Hein as our favorite literature professor at Wheaton College. He really was outstanding. When he would read a passage aloud in class, it was mesmerizing. We will be praying for God’s comfort and encouragement to be experienced by the family.

I remember all the adult classes from Roland at christ Church of Oak Brook and at the Wade Center at Wheaton College and his remarkable landscaping at his home, prior to moving to Windsor Park.

I am sending Dorothy my deepest sympathies and condolences. May the LORD cover you with his loving kindness.

Paul and I were very saddened, especially for Dorothy and all of their family, to hear that Roland has passed from time into eternity. May the Lord sustain and comfort each one of them.

Paul and Roland were colleagues at Wheaton College. In addition, we were privileged to live next door to the Heins and were able to enjoy Roland's beautiful gardens and his Koi pond. His dinner plate dalias were always spectacular. He shared many tips for gardening and was clearly instrumental in the evolution of our own gardens, both in Wheaton and now in SW Utah. We are grateful to God for his life and witness. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Dr. Hein was an amazing teacher who blessed me through his book groups at the Wade Center. My own students have benefited from my hours with him. I will never forget his faith, his wisdom or his kindness.

My name is Dorothy Netolicka Perry and my age is 84. I am very surprised to find that my maiden name and Rolland’s wife’s name are almost identical. At a convenient time, I would appreciate any info on the name you might have. Email me at [email protected]. Much appreciated.

He was one of the kindest and wisest men I have ever met, and it was my pleasure to serve him with a bit of artwork.

In his Saturday Readings at the Wade, he gave me a new understanding and appreciation for the works of George MacDonald, as well as helping me to enjoy C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength.

He was my literary mentor in Christian romanticism, and I look so forward to embracing him in glory.

We are so grateful to have known Rolland and were blessed to visit their home with his beautiful garden and special train. His book group was wonderful and we're grateful for him introducing us to George MacDonald. Blessings & prayers to Dorothy and his children and grandchildren. I'm guessing he's having some wonderful conversations with C.S.Lewis and George MacDonald. He was such a special man! (Here's a photo I took of them in their beautiful garden in 2010)

Dr. Hein was one of my favorite professors during my time at Wheaton (90-94). He encouraged my love of literature and how God reveals himself through great myths. I still remember when we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday as a campus and many professors read his works in MSC. If my memory serves me, Dr. Hein read "Green Eggs and Ham". He had such a wonderful reading voice. I am so appreciative of the impact he made in my life.
