Dudley Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2002.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Actor Dudley Moore, who became an unlikely Hollywood heartthrob portraying a cuddly pipsqueak whose charm melted hearts in "10" and "Arthur," died Wednesday at his home in New Jersey, a spokeswoman said. He was 66.

Moore died at 11 a.m. EST, said publicist Michelle Bega in Los Angeles. The British-born actor died of pneumonia as a complication of progressive supranuclear palsy, she said.

He was diagnosed with the disease, a rare, incurable brain disorder similar to Parkinson's, in 1999 after suffering balance problems and other symptoms. The following year, he acknowledged in an interview that he would likely die of the diasease but reacted angrily to reports that the end was near.

"I suppose my imminent death will sell papers, while my positive and life-affirming work is of no interest to anyone," he said in a statement.

There was more than a touch of autobiography in "10," the 1979 film in which Moore played a musician determined to marry a perfect woman. But the happy ending eluded him in real life. Four marriages ended in divorce.

He confessed to being driven by feelings of inferiority about his working-class origins in Dagenham, east London, and because of his height of five feet, 2 1/2 inches. In later life he also spoke of the pain of being rejected by his mother because he was born with a deformed left foot.

Comedians, he said in an interview with Newsday in 1980, are often driven by such feelings. "I certainly did feel inferior. Because of class. Because of strength. Because of height. ... I guess if I'd been able to hit somebody in the nose, I wouldn't have been a comic."

Moore first became famous for his work in comedy revues in London and on Broadway, and he made his screen debut in "The Wrong Box" in 1966.

But his big screen success came more than a decade later, after he settled in Southern California and met the director Blake Edwards in a therapy group. When George Segal walked out of Edwards' production of "10," the director turned to Moore. The film, co-starring Bo Derek, established Moore as a Hollywood star.

In 1981, he had another smash, "Arthur," playing a rich drunk who falls for Liza Minnelli. He was nominated for a best actor Academy Award for his performance. Co-star John Gielgud, who played Arthur's valet, won the Oscar for best supporting actor.

That marked the peak of Moore's film career, though he made several more films including a sequel to "Arthur" in 1988. Among his other films were "Lovesick," 1983; "Unfaithfully Yours," 1984; and "Best Defense," 1984.

Music was Moore's entree into public performance, first as a chorister and organist in his parish church in Dagenham, near London, and then in 1960 as a young Oxford graduate recruited for the hit four-man comedy review "Beyond the Fringe."

"Fringe," which played two years in London and then moved to Broadway, was perhaps the greatest assembly of young comic talent in Britain in the 20th century. Moore was teamed with Alan Bennett, later a successful playwright; Jonathan Miller, the cerebral opera producer and medical doctor; and Peter Cook, a surreal comic talent.

Moore's whimsical sense of humor fitted oddly with the more savage satirical style of his partners. "Apart from his musical contributions to the show," Cook wrote in Esquire in 1974, "Dudley's suggestions were treated with benign contempt by the rest of us."

One of Moore's celebrated contributions to the show was his impersonation of the pianist Dame Myra Hess, playing a bombastic version of "Colonel Bogey's March" which he couldn't seem to end.

Moore and Cook formed a fast friendship and later teamed on television as Dud and Pete on "Not Only ... but Also," a sketch comedy series. They also plumbed the depths of taste and decency in a series of recordings as "Derek and Clive."

Cook and Moore both made their screen debuts in "The Wrong Box," and followed up in 1967 with another success, "Bedazzled." Moore wrote, starred in and composed the score for his next film, "30 is a Dangerous Age, Cynthia" in 1968.

Moore and Cook teamed again in 1971 for a comedy review titled "Beyond the Fridge," which was a success in London and a smash on Broadway in the 1973-74 season, with the pair winning a special Tony award for their "unique contribution to the theater of comedy."

Music remained part of Moore's life, both as a jazz pianist and as a parodist.

"I can't imagine not having music in my life, playing for myself or for other people. If I was asked, 'Which would you give up,' I'd have to say acting," he said in an interview with The Associated Press in 1988.

Moore married Suzy Kendall in 1958, Tuesday Weld in 1975, Brogan Lane in 1988 and Nicole Rothschild in 1994. He had a son, Patrick, by his second marriage and a son, Nicholas, by his fourth.

"He had a little boy lost quality about him, which women loved, and there was always something slightly forlorn about Dudley, even when he was being funny," said Michael Parkinson, a British talk-show host. "He was a lovely man."

The disease PSP is extremely rare, affecting about one out of every 100,000 people, mostly men in their early 60s. It was first identified in 1963.

For Dudley...

At the mere mention of your
name it brings a smile
to the millions who still
hold you dear to their heart.

Dudley...this is for you.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I first discovered Dudley around 1990 or so. I was in middle school at the time. I remember making my friend watch his movies with me and I'd rent Arthur 2 from the video store all the time. Over the years, I continued to be a fan. When I graduated and finally got a computer, I made a fansite. Only a few months ago, I moved it to a better location and got back into updating it as I rediscovered Dudley for a second time. Being able to watch things online that I hadn't seen before, plus rewatching the videos I already have, have really been fun. A lot of my time has been spent watching/listening to this gifted fellow. Thanks for all the laughs, Dud!

Don’t know if anyone actually reads this stuff, but I wanted to say that Dudley is, and will be, missed very much. I was born only a few months before “Arthur 2” was released, but my childhood would not have been the same without “Arthur.” Every time I watch it or hear “Best That You Can Do,” I remember that time when life was a lot less complicated and I smile. I’ve heard that “Arthur” was a pretty big hit, but I am sure it wasn’t appreciated as much as it should have been. I cannot fathom how difficult it must be to portray a drunken millionaire playboy, but Dudley did an excellent job. He was so talented that he actually made you feel sorry for Arthur. The world will never be the same with Dudley gone, but thank goodness for DVDs. It breaks my heart that such a wonderful person spent so much of his life suffering.

Dear Dud, When you appeared in Beyond the Fringe in London I witnessed three performances and screamed with laughter each time. I saw all your TV episodes of Not Only But Also and That Was the Week that Was. I think I know your lines in Arthur by heart. You have provided us with laughter and given us food for thought. You have enhanced our understanding of the meaning of life and the value and essence of humour. We owe you a great deal. See you soon, Dud.

I can feel for Mr. Moore's family. My wife has been suffering from PSP since 1999 and is now in the last stages. She is now in a nursing home. It is the most terrible disease I have ever seen because it robs an individual of all motor skills and all dignity and leaves the mind in-tact. I can only hope that some day a cure is found. My prayers go out to Mr. Moore's family.
