Dwayne Hunter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2023.
Dwayne A. Hunter, beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle was called home to glory on July 5, 2023, in Lake City, Florida.

Dwayne was born to Harvey and Ophelia Hunter on March 24, 1942, in Waterville, Maine. As a child, he was always active in sports, in particular basketball, and although very shy he was kind to those he met. He was faithfully invited to church by neighbors Reginald and Florence Gray every Sunday. After hearing a presentation of the gospel by chalk artist Ding Teuling, Dwayne received Jesus as His Lord and Savior at an early age, leading to an exemplary life of service.

Dwayne met his beloved wife, Judy in the fall of 1961 at New Brunswick Bible Institute. They married in September of 1968 and went on to have four children. Dwayne and Judy served together on the mission field in Brazil for 15 years and various other short term mission trips. They also served together as Camp Directors at Circle L Camp (now Camp Goodnews) and Dwayne continued to preach throughout the state of Maine. They would move to Florida , then to Maryland, back to Maine, and eventually settled again in Florida where they would continue to serve, make many friends, and touched many people's lives.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather Dwayne also loved hunting, could always be seen with a western novel, was known for taking the lead at game nights, and adored his grandchildren. Throughout Dwayne's entire life, he held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those he met through kindness and compassion.

Dwayne is survived by his loving wife, Judy E. Hunter, who stood by his side throughout their journey together even until the end. He is also survived by his children and their families: Son Robert A. Hunter (Dawn), their children Howard, Logen, Ethan, and their granddaughter Naomi. Son Stephen L. Hunter (Nikki), their children Stephen, Grace, and Emma. Son Michael R. Hunter (Jennifer), their children Michael and Jackson. Daughter Christine H. Bailey (Frank) their children Austin, Paul, Evangeline, Reagan, and Alexander. Dwayne was a cherished brother to Leroy Hunter (Carole), S. Larry Hunter (Debbie), Mark Hunter (Lisa), sister Cathy Hodsdon, and his brother-in-law Bill Lee. He held a special place in his heart for his Aunt Pat Hunter, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Dwayne was pre-deceased by his sister-in-law Eleanor Hunter, his brother-in-law Ross Hodsdon, and his sister Sharon Lee.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on July 14th, 2024 in Maine, where Dwayne's life will be honored and cherished. Further details about the ceremony will be provided as plans are finalized.

Dwayne A. Hunter will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family. His kind and generous spirit touched the lives of many, and his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is no fool who gives what he can not keep to gain that which he cannot lose. – Jim Elliot

Dwayne was a godly man always willing to do whatever he could to serve his Lord. He and Judy obviously had the gift of helps, giving of themselves to help whomever they could,in the name of their Lord and Savior. You'll be missed dear brother. Love you Judy and Cathy.

Just found this out today. I absolutely know what Judy and her family are going through but what a difference when we know we do not grieve as those without hope! It just pulls us nearer heaven. Condolences for all his family. It is not goodbye but so-long. Love you all, Bev XOXO.

Lots of fond memories of Dwayne on the softball field, basketball courts, coaching his sons in basketball, worshipping our Lord together, and always seeing his loving smile whenever we saw him. Our lives were blessed by knowing him, and our deepest sympathy to all who loved and will miss him. We look forward to reuniting with him soon in Heaven.
