Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2008.
E. Ernest Goldstein E. Ernest Goldstein died peacefully in Austin on May 25 after a long illness. Predeceased by his wife, Peggy R. Goldstein, he is survived by his children, Susan Lipsitch (Ian Lipsitch) and Daniel Goldstein (Laura Williams); his grandchildren, Marc Lipsitch (Meira Levinson), Joel Lipsitch (Abigail Melnick), Benjamin and Ruth Goldstein and Justine Williams; his great-granddaughters, Rebecca and Gabriella Lipsitch and Sara and Leah Lipsitch; and his sister, Miriam Goldstein Sommer. A celebration of Ernie Goldstein's life was held at Cambridge Tower, 1801 Lavaca on Tuesday May 27 at 6:00 p.m. During World War II he served in the Signal Corps, code-breaking German naval radio messages. Later he served as counsel to various Senate and House committees and as an American delegate to what is today known as the European Union. For ten years he was professor of law at the University of Texas where he continued his lifelong battle for equal rights, leading the campaign to integrate the U.T. dormitories and Austin restaurants, clubs, and theaters. From 1967 to 1969 he was a special assistant to President Johnson. Afterwards, he was as a partner with Coudert Freres in Paris, France. For distinguished service, he was recognized by France as a chevalier, Legion D'Honneur. In retirement in Austin, he advised the Ransom Center on matters of intellectual property. He and his family were grateful for the kind and loving care given by Bertha Clark, Faye Franklin, Kim Joyner, Sharon Grant-White, and Joanne Richardson. They cared for him as a cherished member of their family. His children also appreciate the gentleness of Shelly Baker of Hospice Austin. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the International Rescue Committee or Hospice Austin.

Dan, this is a voice from your elementary school days at Highland Park. I am sorry for the loss of your father and I hope for your strength to get you through this difficult time.

I remember a play day at your house and we shared a fried egg sandwich that your mother had fixed for us, I understood her to say "Friday Sandwich, and I had never had this type of sandwich before!

My best to you. Jack Lyle
