E. Kirby Warren

I was a Stanford Business School student in 1973-75, and I took Professor Warren's class called "The Process of Management". It was one of my favorite courses, due entirely to Professor Warren's engaging personality. I still remember a story he told about how business decisions are really made. I have retold it countless times to colleagues. My sympathies to his family.

Although I only met Kirby through my father´s stay at the Hope Center at the Osborn, his warmth and gentle demeanor came through in all our interactions. My family enjoyed hearing his tales of boxing and I´m sure he could have taught us a few things about the business world too!

We all have such fond memories of Kirby for nearly 60 years. Before he was afflicted by dementia, he truly was one of the most brilliant, most enthusiastic, most loyal and wonderful people any of us could know. Every interaction with him was pure joy for everyone.

I first met Kirby when I arrived at Columbia's Graduate School of Business in 1965 as an MBA candidate and took his course on management (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling or, in other words, POLC). In that setting, I marveled at Kirby's miraculous teaching abilities and his contagious intellectual energy. He was a big part of what made the school great and inspired me to remain there for the remainder of my own career. As time moved on, I was privileged to know Kirby as an esteemed colleague and ultimately as a treasured friend. I came to admire his impressive dedication to academic excellence; his scholarly achievements; and, also, his profound gentleness and kindness. Most of all, I appreciated his unquenchable sense of humor. Kirby wanted to make people laugh. And he worked at this with tireless energy. It was a labor of love and a generous gift to all his colleagues and friends. We will all miss Kirby tremendously while remaining grateful for having known him.

What an impressive resume.....I remember his warmth and all the tales he shared with me in perfect Spanish. I consider myself very lucky to have been a small part of his Business School life; he will be missed. My deepest sympathies to his family....he will always be in my heart.
